The storm was getting worse by the minute, first the rain started coming down in buckets, then the hail started peppering down on us.
The kids were huddled up next to me on the couch with our dog and cat.
Jesse and Rachel were terrified and I wasn’t much better.
The hail was hitting the house so hard it sounded like someone was shooting at us.
The winds were so bad it sounded like a train was coming straight at us and the thunder and lightning made it even more terrifying.
I heard a loud crack and boom and knew a tree had been hit.
I just prayed no one was hurt by it.
Then we lost power and I couldn’t keep the fear from my voice when I told them.
I tried calling my brotherinlaw Ben and his wife Gina but they didn't answer.
I tried my daughterinlaw Diana and my grandson Bryce but they didn't answer either.
I got up and felt my way to the kitchen where I kept flashlights in the drawer.
It was hard to find them in the dark but finally I did and grabbed 2.
I gave one to Rachel and told Jesse to hold onto my leg as I made my way back to the couch.
Just then there was a thunderous crack that shook the house.
Jesse clutched my leg as Rachel sobbed quietly holding our cat.
Our dog was whining and pacing nervously near the basement door.
The wind was howling through the broken window upstairs and I could hear glass shattering.
I grabbed the children and guided them towards the basement steps.
I turned on the flashlight and counted heads in its beam as we went down the stairs.
The old wooden stairs creaked under our feet as we went down.
I guided everyone to sit with their backs against the basement's back wall.
The furthest point from the small windows near the ceiling.
Jesse and Rachel huddled together on an old blanket with our dog and cat.
I went to the storage room and started rummaging through boxes.
I was looking for anything that could be useful.
Behind a stack of Christmas decorations I found Dad's batterypowered emergency radio.
It was so old it had been used in the last 4 tornadoes we had gone through.
I pulled it out and replaced the batteries with new ones from a flashlight kit.
It sputtered to life with static as I turned it on.
I slowly turned the dial until I heard a voice cutting through the rumble of the storm.
