I was eight when I met Remi.
She was the new kid in school and had transferred from a different district.
We were in the third grade, and I was immediately drawn to her.
Not only was she gorgeous with long, curly brown hair and big, bright hazel eyes, but she was also bold.
She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and was unafraid to stand up to the class bullies.
I knew right then and there that we would be best friends.
We shared our lunches together, partnered up for every project, and sat together on the bus.
Remi had an older brother and sister, and they both went to the local university.
Her older brother, Cason, lived in a small apartment off campus, and her sister, Maggie, still resided at home with their parents.
Remi’s family was very intersexfriendly, and her parents were extremely supportive when she told them about her condition.
After school on Friday, I gathered up my courage and approached Remi at her locker.
My heart raced as I fidgeted with the strap of my backpack.
I watched as she put her books in her bag and closed her locker.
When she turned around, she noticed me standing there and smiled.
"Hey, bestie. What’s up?"
Remi asked me as she slung her bag over her shoulder.
I shrugged my shoulders and looked down at my feet.
"I was just wondering if you wanted to come over this weekend for a sleepover," I stammered out.
"Why? Are your foster parents going out of town?"
Remi asked me.
I nodded my head and looked back up at her.
"Yeah, they’re going to some conference. They’ll be gone all weekend," I told her.
Remi’s eyes lit up with excitement as she hugged me tightly.
"That sounds like fun! We can order pizza and watch movies," she said excitedly.
I nodded my head in agreement and hugged her back, breathing in the familiar scent of her coconut shampoo. "Yeah, we can do whatever you want," I told her as I pulled away from the hug.
"How about you come over Saturday afternoon? That way we can have more time together."
Remi nodded her head in agreement as we started walking to the bus together.
"That sounds like a plan. What time should I come over?"
"How about 2 o’clock? That will give us plenty of time to hang out before dinner."
"Sounds good to me. I’ll see you tomorrow!"
Remi said excitedly as we reached the bus.
As we sat on the bus, Remi turned to me with a more serious expression.
"Hey, there's something I need to tell you before tomorrow," she said quietly.
I looked at her, sensing the gravity in her voice. "What is it?"
After getting off the bus, Remi and I walked to the corner store near my house.
We both got ice cream, and I noticed that her hands were shaking slightly as she handed over the money.
We sat on the curb outside, licking our treats.
I watched as she picked at the wrapper of her ice cream bar, barely taking a bite.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
I asked her, concerned.
She looked up at me with a weak smile.
"There's something I need to tell you tomorrow," she said, her voice trembling.
"It's been weighing on me for a while now."
I tried to press her for more information, but she shook her head.
"Just trust me, okay? It's nothing bad. Just something personal."
As we finished our ice cream and walked back to my house, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
What could Remi possibly want to tell me that was so important?
When we reached my driveway, she hugged me tightly before turning to leave.
"I'll see you tomorrow," she said softly.
