Marcus Flynn
senior instructor and mentor to Elara, friends with other instructors, rugged with a stern face, wise and skeptical.
Elara Thorne
aspiring commando, relationships with fellow trainees and instructors, athletic build, determined and courageous.
"Will she pass out?"
The whispers came from the shadows, soft as a summer breeze carrying the scent of lavender on its breath.
I heard those whispers, each and every one of them.
They crawled under my skin, a thousand ants marching in unison to remind me that I was an intruder, a mere mortal daring to challenge the realm of the gods.
Special forces.
Those two words were synonymous with masculinity, at least in most people’s minds.
A woman simply wasn’t built for this kind of training—not physically, and certainly not mentally.
I’d spent the last six weeks proving those doubters wrong, my body transforming into a lean fighting machine capable of taking on any obstacle set in my path.
Tonight was no different.
As I stood in line with the other thirty-nine trainees, waiting for our instructors to appear, I ignored the whispers and focused on what lay ahead.
