I remember the day I met Jack like it was yesterday.
It was 1974 and I was twenty-one years old, competing in yet another beauty pageant.
I won that pageant and the title of Miss Tennessee, which sent me on to the national stage to compete for the title of Miss America.
I didn't win that pageant, but I did catch the eye of a handsome young man who was taping a television special in the same building.
His name was Jack Monroe, and he was an up-and-coming actor and singer with a charming smile, short black hair and piercing blue eyes.
He had charisma oozing from his pores as he performed on stage, capturing the hearts of all the women in the audience.
I sat at the vanity, brushing my hair, when the doorbell rang.
The sound echoed through the house, and I could hear Lucas and Ethan racing to answer it, their footsteps pounding against the floor.
Moments later, they returned with a large bouquet of roses, their sweet fragrance filling the room.
"Ethan, Lucas, what's all the commotion about?" I asked, setting my brush down.
"Mom, these are for you!" Ethan exclaimed, handing me the flowers.
I took the bouquet from him, inhaling deeply as I buried my face in the blooms.
I noticed a small envelope nestled among the stems and gently plucked it out.
My heart fluttered as I opened it, revealing Jack's familiar handwriting.
"Dinner tonight?" it read.
A smile crept across my face as I nodded to myself, already planning what to wear.
I placed the note on the dresser and began preparing for our evening.
The boys watched me with excitement, knowing that whenever Dad sent flowers, it meant a special night was ahead.
"Can we help you get ready, Mom?" Lucas asked, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
I smiled and handed them each a hairpin. "You can help me with my hair."
As they worked on styling my locks, I slipped into my closet to choose an outfit.
I settled on a flowy yellow sundress with white flowers embroidered along the hem.
The dress was one of Jack's favorites, and I knew it would make him smile.
With my hair styled and makeup applied, I felt like a queen again.
The doorbell rang once more, and this time it was Jack standing in the doorway, looking dashing in his black tuxedo.
"Wow," he said, taking in my appearance. "You look stunning."
I blushed and smiled, feeling like I was floating on air.
The boys cheered and clapped as Jack handed me a small box. "For you," he said, his eyes twinkling.
I opened it to reveal a beautiful silver necklace with a small diamond pendant.
"Oh, Jack," I breathed. "It's gorgeous."
He fastened it around my neck, his fingers brushing against my skin.
As we stood there, surrounded by our children and the sweet scent of roses, I felt grateful for this life we'd built together.
