Sophia, a wealthy and privileged college student in New York City, flees to her family's cabin in Bluefield to escape the chaos of the coronavirus outbreak, only to discover that her brother's best friend, Noah, has also sought refuge there, leading to a tense confrontation between the two.
It’s spring break, and I was supposed to be spending the next seven days in the Bahamas with my friends, soaking up the sun and drinking way too much alcohol.
But as we all know, things didn’t exactly go as planned.
Instead of lying on a beach somewhere, I’m in the middle of a global pandemic, and New York City is on lockdown.
I can’t even imagine how bad things must be if they’re telling us to stay inside and avoid people at all costs.
My parents are worried, and they’ve been calling me nonstop for the past two days to make sure I’m okay.
When I told them that I was planning to go to Bluefield for spring break, they were less than thrilled.
But after talking to them for a while, I was able to convince them that it would be safer for me to be at the cabin than stuck in my apartment in the city.
I mean, I have three different homes I could go to in times of crisis, so why not take advantage of that?
My parents have always been overprotective, but they also trust me to make good decisions.
So when I told them that I was going to Bluefield, they knew there wasn’t much they could say to change my mind.
But of course, that didn’t stop them from giving me a laundry list of things to do before I left.
“Make sure you have plenty of food with you,” Susan says, holding up a bag of chips and tossing it into my open suitcase.
“Check.”I grab a box of cereal from the pantry and toss it into the bag with everything else.
“Don’t forget your medication,” she says, grabbing my pill bottle from the counter and putting it in my purse.
“And make sure you have enough clothes to last you for at least two weeks.” She looks at my suitcase, which is now filled to the brim with everything from tank tops to winter coats, along with all the shoes I could stuff into it.
“I think you’re good to go.”
Susan has been my assistant for the past two years, and she’s easily one of my favorite people in the entire world.
She’s also a total lifesaver when it comes to situations like this.
I would have been completely lost without her help, and I know that she’s the reason I’m actually going to make it to the cabin in one piece.
“Thanks, Susan.” I give her a grateful smile and zip up my suitcase, officially ready to leave.
“Of course, Sophia. You know I’m always here for you, no matter what.” She gives me a tight hug before stepping back and looking at me with a worried expression.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself?”
I’m sure.” I give her a reassuring smile, even though I’m not entirely convinced I believe my own words.
“I’ll have my phone on me the entire time, and my parents are only a phone call away if I need anything.”
“Good.” She smiles and gives me another hug before stepping back and patting my arm.
“Take care of yourself, okay? And don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
I laugh and shake my head.
“I’ll try to remember that, Susan.”
My phone buzzes in my pocket as I walk out to my car, and I pull it out to see a text from my mom.
