"Ugh... Ugh... Ugh!"
I moaned, clutching my stomach.
I was in labor.
But I couldn’t just stop and give birth right now.
Not in the middle of a field where the fight had just transferred to.
"Come on, Amy! We have to get out of here!"
Sonic told me, holding my hands and helping me up.
I would have been grateful if I were in any state of mind to listen to him, but my brain was foggy.
All I could think of was how much my stomach hurt.
"Here... let me help you up," he told me, putting his arms around me and helping me stand.
I held onto him for support as he led me away from the fight.
The sound of explosions and robots crumbling got lost in the distance as we walked further and further away from them.
I didn’t know how long we walked for, but eventually, he stopped and let me sit down under a tree.
I sat down, breathing heavily, clutching my stomach again.
"Are you okay?"
Sonic asked me, concern etched on his face as he sat down next to me.
"I…I think so," I told him.
"I just really don’t want to be here right now. I want to go home."
"We will get there eventually," he told me.
"But first, let me check on the others."
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
I leaned against the rough bark of the tree, my heart still racing.
My stomach was still throbbing in pain, and I could feel the sweat trickling down my face.
I watched as Sonic fumbled with his phone, trying to reach someone on the other end.
Finally, he got a response.
"Hey buddy, we've got a situation," he said into the phone, his voice steady despite the fact that his hands were trembling slightly.
"Amy's in labor, and we're stuck in the meadow near Green Hill."
I could hear the voice on the other end of the line asking questions, and Sonic responded with a series of nods and yeses.
"We left them at the battle scene," he explained.
"There were too many robots for us to handle alone. We need backup to clean up the mess."
There was another pause, and then Sonic hung up the phone and turned to me.
"They're on their way," he said reassuringly.
"We just have to hang in there a little longer."
I nodded weakly, feeling another contraction building inside me.
I knew I couldn't hold out much longer.
The pain was getting worse by the minute, and I was starting to feel lightheaded. "Sonic," I called out, my voice strained.
"I think... I think it's getting worse."
Sonic rushed over to me, taking my hand in his.
"Try to breathe through it," he said softly.
"Remember what you learned in childbirth class."
I closed my eyes and focused on my breathing, trying to push through the pain.
But it was no use.
The contractions were getting stronger and closer together now, and I could feel the baby pushing against my insides.
"We need to decide now," I panted, my eyes opening wide with panic.
"We're having this baby here."
I scan the meadow for any remaining threats, but it seems we're alone.
I quickly gather a handful of soft grass and wildflowers, trying to create a makeshift bed beneath the tree.
Amy grips my hand through another contraction, her face contorted in pain.
"Just breathe, Ames," I whisper, demonstrating the panting technique we learned in childbirth class.
With trembling fingers, I arrange the grass in a thick cushion, trying to make it as comfortable as possible.
Amy's labor is progressing rapidly now - she can barely move between contractions.
I help her settle onto the grass bed, supporting her back against the tree trunk.
The sun filters through the leaves above us, casting dappled shadows on Amy's face.
I position myself beside her, ready to catch our child.
Amy squeezes my hand again, harder this time.
"It's happening," she gasps.
