I was running through the tunnels under Station Square, trying to get away from Dr. Robotnik's robots.
I had been living in these tunnels for a while now, ever since Dr. Robotnik had tried to take over the world.
I knew the tunnels like the back of my hand, and I could run through them with my eyes closed.
Which was good, because I was running as fast as I could right now.
"Ha!" I heard a robot shout behind me.
"You'll never outrun me, Sonic!"
I didn't bother to look back.
I kept running, my feet pounding against the ground.
I could hear the robot getting closer and closer, but I didn't turn around until I saw a side tunnel up ahead.
I dodged into it just in time.
The robot ran past the tunnel entrance, shouting out loud.
"Damn it! Where did he go?"
I grinned, not that anyone could see it.
It was easy to outrun Dr. Robotnik's robots when you had my speed.
But even with my speed, I had to know where I was going.
That was why I had spent so much time exploring the tunnels when I first moved here.
Now, I knew exactly where I was going.
I ran through the tunnels until I came across a manhole cover that led up to the surface.
I stopped and looked up, trying to see if anyone was around.
Sonic Adventure
I pressed my ear against the cold metal of the manhole cover, listening for any sign of movement above.
The distant echo of robot patrols bounced through the tunnel behind me, but I tuned them out, focusing on the sounds above.
I strained to hear footsteps or the mechanical whirring of a badnik.
Thirty seconds passed, and I heard nothing.
Confident that the coast was clear, I placed my hands on the underside of the cover and prepared to lift it just enough to peek through.
Just as I was about to push up, a screech of metal on concrete echoed above me.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.
Through the tiny gaps around the edge of the manhole cover, I caught glimpses of something metallic scraping across the street above.
Hawk's metallic talons scraped against the pavement as he stalked past my hiding spot.
"Hey, Sonic, you down there?" Hawk's voice was a low rumble, tinged with urgency.
Sonic Adventure
I hesitated for a moment before responding, "Yeah, Hawk, it's me. What's going on up there?"
Hawk glanced around cautiously before whispering, "Robotnik's got a new plan—he's setting traps all over the city to catch you."
I pressed my ear against the manhole cover one final time, listening for any signs of movement.
Then I pushed it up slightly, just enough to peek through the gap.
Hawk hovered nearby, his metallic wings catching the dim glow of the streetlights.
"Robotnik's been busy," he whispered, gesturing toward a nearby alley.
"Motion sensors every twenty feet, connected to hidden spike traps. We need to take them down before they catch anyone."
I slid the manhole cover aside and pulled myself up onto the street, staying low behind a dumpster to avoid detection.
Hawk landed beside me, pulling out a crude map he had drawn of the city.
The map was covered in red X's, marking the locations of the motion sensors and spike traps.
I studied the map, tracing the pattern of X's with my finger.
They formed a grid that stretched across the city, leading all the way to the central square where Dr. Robotnik's fortress loomed.
Sonic Adventure
"We need to start here," I said, pointing to a cluster of X's near an old arcade on the outskirts of town.
"That's where most of these traps are concentrated."
Hawk nodded, tucking the map back into his pocket.
"Let's get moving. We don't have much time before Robotnik realizes what we're doing." We crept through the shadows, keeping our eyes peeled for any signs of badniks or traps.
As we approached the first trap location, I could see a small metal box attached to the wall.
A thin wire ran from the box down to a pressure plate on the ground.
If someone stepped on that plate, it would trigger the trap and send spikes shooting up from the ground.
I knelt down next to the pressure plate and examined it closely.
It was simple enough—a basic switch that would activate when someone stepped on it.
But there had to be more to it than that.
Dr. Robotnik wouldn't just leave these traps lying around without some kind of backup plan in place.
I looked up at Hawk, who was watching me with a curious expression on his face.
"What do you think?"
I asked him.
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't know. Maybe there's a hidden trigger or something?"
Sonic Adventure
I nodded thoughtfully and continued examining the pressure plate. After a few minutes of searching, I found what I was looking for—a small button hidden underneath one corner of the plate.
