Jake

He is a young man struggling with his size. He is determined, embarrassed, and hopeful. Jake struggles to find clothes that fit, as he is unusually short and slender. He visits a store, hoping to find suitable pants and shirts, but ends up in the boys section. Despite his embarrassment, he manages to find clothes that fit, albeit in the boys section. Overcoming his size issues, Jake is relieved to have found something that fits, even if it means facing awkward situations.

Store Clerk

He is a friendly clerk at the store where Jake shops. He is helpful, observant, and nonjudgmental. The clerk assists Jake in finding clothes in the boys section, suggesting he might prefer smaller sizes. He doesn't question Jake's shopping habits despite the unusual circumstance of a grown man buying kids' clothes. The clerk's help and understanding make Jake's shopping experience less embarrassing and more manageable.

I am 21 years old and I am only 5’4" and 125 pounds.
When people see me they think I am a preteen.
I need to go get some clothes, I haven’t bought any in a while.
I don’t like going clothes shopping because I know I won’t fit in the men’s department.
I know I will have to go to the boys department.
It’s embarrassing, but what can you do?
I go to the store and head straight to the clothes.
I look around and know I won’t fit any of these.
I see a shirt that is men’s size small, it looks like it might fit me, so I grab it and head to the mirror.
I take off the shirt I have on and try this one on.
It fits perfect, I couldn’t be happier, for once something in my size.
Next, I need some shorts.
I know these are going to be hard to find, but I have to try.
I look around and see some shorts that are size 28 waist.
They look like they might be okay, so I try them on.
They are perfect, I am so happy, this is the first time ever that I have found something that fits me right off the rack.
I want some underwear, so I grab a pack of men’s smalls.
They should fit fine.
Size Matters
I walk toward the front of the store, clutching my items close to my chest.
The fluorescent lights seem less harsh now that I have found some clothes that actually fit me.
Three people stand in line at the only open register.
I take my place behind an elderly woman with a cart full of socks.
The cashier, a teenager with braces, scans each item methodically - the shirt, then shorts, then the pack of underwear.
I swipe my card and wait for the receipt to print.
No one has given me a second glance, and I am grateful for that.
The receipt prints with a mechanical whir and I stuff my purchases into the plastic bag.
As I turn to leave, a voice calls out, "Hey, wait up!"
I pause and see a tall guy from the men's department approaching me with a curious smile.

"Did you know those shorts are part of a limited edition line?" he asks, glancing at my bag.
I pause near the exit, my hand resting on the glass door.
The guy catches up to me, his long strides eating up the distance.
He is tall, probably over six feet, and has a lean build that fills out his designer jeans and fitted blazer.
His dark hair is perfectly styled, and he has an air of confidence that comes with knowing fashion.
He extends a hand toward me, a silver watch glinting on his wrist.
"Hi, I’m Marcus," he says, his voice smooth and friendly.
"I couldn’t help but notice you picked up those shorts. They’re a great choice."
I shift my weight uncomfortably, clutching my shopping bag closer to my chest.
"Thanks," I mumble.
Marcus gestures toward the shorts in my bag.

"Those are part of our limited edition collection. The stitching pattern on the hem is unique to that line. It’s one of our most popular styles."
He smiles knowingly.
"You have a good eye for fashion."
I nod awkwardly, unsure of what to say.
Marcus pulls out a business card from his pocket and hands it to me.

"You should come by our store sometime; we could use someone with your taste," he suggests, his eyes twinkling with genuine interest.
I blink in surprise, glancing at the card in my hand.
"Really? You think I could work in fashion?"
