Nerves jittering, my hands shook with the force I used to type an email.
I hit send and slumped in my chair with a sigh.
I’d just finished closing the biggest deal of my life.
And then I groaned.
The damn mandatory meeting!
My boss had called me in a panic to let me know about it, and I’d promised to be there within the hour.
I glanced at the clock on my computer screen.
It was late, and I hadn’t been expecting to stay this long.
I’d already put my kids to bed before heading back to work for a few hours.
I contemplated my options.
Emma, my seven-year-old, would be fine if I left her alone, but my four-year-old son would be up with nightmares before long.
I knew it was a long shot, but I had no other option.
I picked up my phone and scrolled through to find Lila’s number.
Lila was the new babysitter my friend had recommended to me a few months ago.
She’d moved to our small town not long before that, and we’d hit it off right away.
She was an aspiring artist, and she was so quirky and free-spirited that it was refreshing to be around her.
She was also short with blonde curls, which was quite different from the tall brunette I’d been married to.
But it wasn’t just that she was different from what I was used to in women that drew me to her.
There was something about her that made me feel alive again.
And that scared me shitless.
If there’s one thing you learn from losing someone you love, it’s that life is too damn short.
But I wasn’t sure if I had it in me to take another chance on happiness.
Still, I didn’t want to spend my life alone either.
My thumb hovered over the call button for longer than it should have.
It was late, and I wasn’t sure if she would even answer.
But then I remembered how she’d told me she was a night owl since she spent most of her time creating art.
I took a deep breath and clicked the button.
“Hello?” Her voice sounded groggy at first but then perked up right away when she heard it was me.
“Hey, Lila,” I said a little too loudly through the phone.
“Everything okay?”
“I’m sorry to call you this late.I know you’re probably busy.”
“No worries at all.” She cut me off.
“What can I do for you?”
Her kindness warmed me through the phone, and when she didn’t sound angry about being woken up in the middle of the night, I let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding.
I quickly explained my situation and then waited for her to tell me she couldn’t help me out at such short notice.
But instead of saying no, she agreed right away.
