Single dad Ethan struggles with the complications of dating while raising his daughter Ava in a small town, and finds romance with a woman who turns out to be the daughter of his client, while his friend Noah deals with co-parenting his son Oliver and develops feelings for his daughter's camp counselor.
“Daddy!” My daughter, Ava, came charging down the driveway of a farmhouse I’d never seen before, waving frantically.
“Livy’s mom, Livy’s mom!” she yelled, and I watched in horror as the woman I’d been thinking about for weeks raised her head to look my way.
Crap, crap, crap.
Olivia Parker was my client?
My potential new client?
I hadn’t seen that coming.
I looked around for the kid Livy I was supposed to be meeting, but all I saw was Ava and Livy’s mom.
Ava slammed into me, wrapping her little arms around my legs.
I bent down to scoop her up, but the damage had already been done.
My eyes met Olivia’s over Ava’s head, and I was about to offer some kind of explanation for my daughter’s behavior when she spoke first.
“Your little girl is adorable.”
I wanted to tell her “thank you,” but the words got caught in my throat.
Instead, I managed a nod and a weak smile.
I was going to have to work at keeping things professional with Olivia.
It sucked, because the last time I’d seen her, we’d been standing in the middle of the farmer’s market in town, and I’d been deciding if it was inappropriate or not to ask her out.
She’d been so beautiful, so unique.
I hadn’t been able to resist.
And now she was standing in front of me as my client.
“Thank you,” I said finally.
“I’m sorry she ran up like that.
She’s very excited about her new friend.”
“I’m guessing you’re Ethan?”
Olivia asked with a smile.
Ava had wiggled out of my arms and was waiting behind me, trying to look around me so she could see Olivia again.
Olivia must have figured it out when Ava had called me “Daddy” that we were related somehow.
She looked around and then down at Ava.
Ava finally had full view of Livy who stood next to her mother, looking shyly at us.
“You must be Livy,” I said softly.
Olivia grabbed her daughter’s hand and pushed her forward gently.
“Go ahead and say hi,” she encouraged.
Livy took one step forward and then another, stopping when she was right next to me.
Her eyes met mine quickly before she ducked her head as if she were embarrassed about something.
“Hi, Livy,” I said.
She peeked up at me from under her lashes and offered a quick wave.
I grinned and then looked up at Olivia.
“I’m guessing you’re here to meet with me?”
She nodded, her green eyes meeting mine.
I shivered slightly, but she didn’t seem affected by the connection between us.
Olivia Parker was gorgeous, but she was also a single mom, and I’d never dated a woman with kids before.
I didn’t know how I felt about it yet either.
We’d all been through a lot recently, and I wasn’t sure I was ready for complications in the dating department.
Especially when I could so easily see myself getting lost in those beautiful eyes of hers.
“I was just heading inside if you want to come with us.” She hesitated.
“It would be easier than trying to stand here in the driveway.”
I nodded and started toward the door.
“Let’s go.” Deciding not to go further into what had happened at the farmer’s market, I turned back to her quickly.
