Chapter 1
I’m a twin, I think I’m a twin, I hope I’m a twin.
I’m not sure if I am a twin.
My sister looks like me, but I don’t look like her.
She’s the prettier one.
I’m the darker one.
She’s the paler one.
I’m the uglier one.
She’s the better one.
I’m the badder one.
Silent Pact: The Tragic Tale of the Gibbons Twins
We’re twins, we’re twins, we’re twins!
We’re twins, we’re twins, we’re twins!
We’re twins, we’re twins, we’re twins!
We’re twins, we’re twins, we’re twins!
We are June and Jennifer Gibbons: The Silent Twins
We were born on April 11th, 1963, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados.
Our mother was a Jamaican who had married an Englishman and moved to Barbados, where he worked as a district officer.
Her first baby had died stillborn and her second baby David Paul died of pneumonia when he was ten months old and was buried in the churchyard in St. James – our father’s family came from there and our mother eventually moved close by so she could visit his grave regularly.
It was only a year later that we were born.
Our arrival must have come as something of a shock because when our mother saw us she fainted and had to be revived with smelling salts before she could look again.
Silent Pact: The Tragic Tale of the Gibbons Twins
It was not surprising she fainted really – after all, we were so alike that if you dressed me in Jennifer's clothes and Jennifer in mine it would be impossible to tell us apart.
I could have been her and she could have been me.
But our mother eventually got used to the shock of seeing two rather than one and on that island where most families had more than one child anyway our arrival was greeted with joy by everyone else – all except our mother’s sister who couldn’t bear to look at us because of what had happened to David Paul.
We never knew him of course but his death cast a long shadow over us as it did over all of our mother’s subsequent pregnancies which ended in miscarriage until June and I were born alive, healthy and screaming in unison: "Don’t take my sister away from me!"
Silent Pact: The Tragic Tale of the Gibbons Twins
Our mother is black from Jamaica, our father is white from Barbados.
They were married for ten years before we were born.
Our older brother David Paul would have been five when we were born, he died at just ten months old from pneumonia.
We never knew him but our mother told us that we were so alike that if you dressed me in Jennifer's clothes and Jennifer in mine it was impossible to tell us apart.
A year after David Paul's death June and I were born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on April 11th 1963 where our mother was taken into labour one month early with us both lying across her stomach like two little kittens.
When we arrived she fainted: We must have given her quite a shock because when she saw us she fell down onto the floor with a thump.
The doctor revived her with smelling salts before she would look at us again
