TD-LTE or FD-LTE?
That was the question.
Standing in front of the shelf with 4G LTE CPEs, I was struggling to make a decision.
Both TD-LTE and FD-LTE were LTE technologies, but they were quite different in terms of their architecture, bandwidth allocation and even applications.
I knew FD-LTE, also known as FDD-LTE, was more widely used around the world.
It employed separate frequencies for upstream and downstream data, which allowed for larger bandwidth and faster data speeds.
However, TD-LTE, or TDD-LTE, utilized a single frequency for both upstream and downstream data, sharing the frequency on the basis of time.
This made it more like Wi-Fi in terms of bandwidth allocation.
Though TD-LTE had smaller bandwidth and slower data speeds compared with FD-LTE, it was more suitable for small cell networks and better for burst-type data traffic.
As I was deep in thought, Mark walked up behind me.
"What's wrong?"
He asked.
Mark was a good friend of mine and also worked here in the store.
I pointed to the 4G LTE CPEs on the shelf and said,
"I'm trying to decide whether to choose TD-LTE or FD-LTE."
Mark was very knowledgeable about mobile networks, so I always came to him for advice when I needed help with tech stuff.
He looked at me with a smile and said,
"Where are you going to use it?"
