I walk into the living room and see my sister sitting on the couch.
She’s watching TV, her long brown hair hanging down her back.
She looks up at me when I enter the room.
"Hey, Matt. What’s up?"
I stand there for a moment, trying to work up the courage to ask her what I came in here for.
I’m always so shy around her, and I don’t know why.
It’s not like she’s ever been mean to me or anything.
In fact, she’s always been really nice to me.
Maybe that’s why I’m so shy around her.
I don’t want to do anything to make her mad at me.
"Matt?"
she says, looking at me with concern.
"Is everything okay?"
I nod my head and take a deep breath before finally blurting out what I came in here to ask her.
"Can I have a cuddle?"
Her eyes widen in surprise, and I immediately regret asking her that question.
What was I thinking?

Emily's eyes soften as she processes my request.
She pats the couch beside her, inviting me to sit.
I hesitate but then shuffle over, my heart pounding.
I sit stiffly at first, unsure of what to do.
Emily wraps an arm around me, pulling me close.
The warmth and comfort of her embrace make me relax.
We sit in silence for a while, the TV playing in the background.
I feel a wave of relief wash over me.
Emily gently strokes my hair, whispering that it's okay to ask for comfort.
I smile shyly, feeling safe and understood for the first time in a long while.
"Thanks, Em," I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Anytime, little bro," she replies softly.
The tension in my shoulders melts away as we sit there together.
The sound of the TV fades into the background, replaced by the steady rhythm of Emily's breathing.
I close my eyes and let myself be enveloped by the moment.
For once, I don't feel like I have to put up a front or pretend to be strong.
It's just me and Emily, and that's enough.
After a while, Emily shifts slightly, breaking the comfortable silence.

"Do you want to talk about it?" she asks gently.
I open my eyes and look up at her, considering her question.
Part of me wants to spill everything that's been weighing on my mind, but another part is afraid of burdening her with my problems.
"I... I don't know," I admit honestly. "It's just... everything feels so overwhelming sometimes."
Emily nods understandingly. "I get it. Life can be really tough. But you don't have to go through it alone, Matt. I'm here for you."
Her words are like a balm to my soul.
I take a deep breath and decide to share a little bit more. "School's been really hard lately. And... I don't know if I'm doing anything right."
Emily tightens her embrace slightly. "You're doing your best, and that's all anyone can ask for. It's okay to struggle sometimes."
Her reassurance brings tears to my eyes.
I blink them away quickly, not wanting to cry in front of her.
But Emily notices anyway and pulls me even closer. "It's okay to cry too," she says softly. "You don't always have to be strong."
The dam breaks, and I let out a choked sob.

Emily holds me tightly as I cry into her shoulder, all the pent-up stress and frustration pouring out of me.
She doesn't say anything more; she just lets me cry until there are no more tears left.
When I finally pull back, sniffling and wiping my eyes, Emily gives me a small smile. "Feel better?"
"A little," I admit with a shaky laugh. "Thanks for being here for me."
"Always," she says firmly. "You're my brother, Matt. I'll always be here for you."
Her words fill me with warmth and gratitude.
For the first time in a long while, I feel like maybe things will be okay after all.
Just as I'm about to thank her again, there's a loud crash from outside the window.
Both Emily and I jump up in alarm.
"What was that?" she asks, her eyes wide with fear.
"I don't know," I reply, my heart racing again for an entirely different reason now.
We rush to the window and peer outside into the darkness.
In the dim light from the streetlamp, we see a shadowy figure moving quickly across our yard.
"Stay here," I tell Emily urgently as I head towards the front door.
