I was having a bad day.
It had started with stubbing my toe on the bed, then spilling coffee all over my shirt, and continued with traffic jams and long lines at the store.
I was grumpy, tired, and just wanted to get home to my husband and daughter.
Mark and Lily would make me feel better.
I could talk to them about my day, get some hugs, and forget about all the little annoyances.
I reached the front door of our house and fumbled for my keys.
I remembered that I had put them in my left pocket, but they weren't there.
I then remembered that I had changed into a new shirt after spilling coffee on the other one, and that I must have left my keys in the old shirt's pocket.
I sighed and walked back to the car.
As I reached the car, I noticed that it was very quiet.
There were no birds singing, and the usual rustling of leaves in the wind was absent.
It was too quiet.
I opened the car door and grabbed my keys, but as I turned to head back to the front door, I heard a strange rumbling sound.
It started low and grew in intensity until it became a deafening roar.
I rushed back to the front door, my heart pounding in time with the rumbling noise.
I fumbled for my keys again, but this time they were in my pocket.
I shoved them into the lock and turned them, unlocking the door.
I pushed it open and stepped inside.
The living room was quiet and still.
The rumbling noise was gone, but I felt like something was off.
"Mark?
Lily?"
I called out, but there was no answer.
I walked further into the house, calling out again.
"Hello? Anyone here?"
As I moved towards the kitchen, I saw something tiny moving on the floor near the couch.
I squinted, trying to see what it was.
It looked like a minuscule hand waving at me.
I knelt down on the floor and stared at it in disbelief.
It was a tiny person, waving their arms frantically at me.
They were so small that I could hardly see them, but as I looked around, I saw more of them scattered across the floor.
There were tiny people running around on the coffee table, and even more climbing up the legs of the couch.
It hit me like a wave; it was my family.
I crouched down even lower, my eyes wide with shock.
My heart was pounding in my chest, and I felt like I couldn't breathe.
I reached out a hand towards them, my fingers trembling slightly.
Mark waved his arms at me again, trying to get my attention.
Lily clung to his side, her tiny face pinched with worry.
"Oh my god," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"What happened?"
I gently extended my hand towards them, trying not to startle them further.
They were so tiny that I was afraid of accidentally hurting them.
Mark looked up at me, his face filled with fear and uncertainty.
"Emily," he mouthed, his voice barely a whisper.
"We're...we're small."
I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I know. I'm going to figure out what happened and find a way to fix it, okay?"
I said softly.
"I promise."
Mark nodded, his eyes wide with trust.
I reached out again, this time more confidently.
I scooped them up in the palm of my hand, being careful not to crush them.
As I stood up, holding them carefully in my hand, I tried to think of what could have caused this to happen.
Mark looked up at me, his tiny voice filled with urgency.
"It was the rumbling, Emily. Something in the basement—it's like it shrank us."
Lily clutched Mark's arm, her eyes wide with fear.
"Mom, please hurry. I don't want to be small forever."
