I was nine years old when I realized I was poor.
It was raining and I was at Cooper Bradford’s house.
His family is one of the richest in our town, Riverview Heights.
I was eating a sandwich his personal chef, François, had made me in their huge kitchen.
Cooper was sitting next to me, eating the same sandwich.
When I finished mine, I threw the wrapper in the trash can that was five feet away from me.
As I did that, I noticed my wrapper landed on top of another one just like it.
I then looked around the kitchen and realized that every wrapper I threw away that day landed on top of another one.
That’s when it hit me.
They didn’t run out of food at their house; they didn’t run out of anything.
I went home that night and told no one about what I’d discovered.
My mom was making dinner and my dad was sitting at the table.
My dad only worked one job back then, so he was home earlier than he is now.
I didn’t say anything to them; I just looked at the table where we only had three sandwiches cut in half to share between five of us and then looked at my parents.
I knew we were poor, but I never thought about it until that day.
Being poor sucks.
Not just because you don’t have what you want; it’s more than that.
