El Salvador
The sound of breaking glass echoes through the night air, startling me.
I duck behind a dumpster and peer around the corner.
A dark figure kicks in the door of the local newspaper office.
My heart pounds.
This is no robbery.
I know who this man is—he’s part of La Sombra, a dangerous gang linked to the ruling political party.
They’re here for one reason: to destroy evidence.
My hands shake as I pull out my phone and send a text to Carlos, a local activist and my friend.
Then I call the police.
But I know they won’t come.
Not for this.
The government doesn’t want anyone to know what’s really going on in our small town.
As I hide, I think back to earlier today when I went to the police station to look at the files on the recent murders of two local journalists.
Both were investigating a possible link between the government and La Sombra.
The police chief kicked me out, but I managed to sneak a photo of one of the files with my phone before he threw me out.
The file was coded, but I’m sure it has something to do with the murders.
If La Sombra can get their hands on that evidence, they’ll destroy it and no one will ever be brought to justice for killing those two brave journalists.
The figure destroys the office, looking for something—anything that might bring the government down.
I’m sure he’s looking for what I photographed.
