Shadows.
Everywhere.
Even here, in the bright light of day, I see the darkness.
It’s always there, just out of sight.
Waiting.Watchful.
Here to take me back to my own world whenever I wish to return.
I can feel the pull even here, in this strange place.
I push it away.
I have duties to attend to first.
"Raszire?"
Coming from behind me, the voice is quiet and hesitant.
I turn to find the woman I married only a few days ago standing in the doorway of this chamber.
Her long silver hair cascades down her elegant body.
Emerald eyes watch me warily.
"Yes?"
I find myself unable to take my eyes off her.
She is stunningly beautiful, and she has no idea that I am torn between my duty to her and my desire for her sister.
"Will you not come down to dinner?"
She hesitates in the doorway, unsure of herself, and then turns and disappears back down the corridor.
Dinner.
Yes.
I need to go to dinner.
Not because I am hungry, but because it would be unseemly of me not to attend.
Shadows of Desire: The Shadow Strider's Dilemma
I follow her down the corridor, my heart pounding in my chest.
I can feel the weight of my duty to her, but I also feel the pull of something else.
Something I should not be feeling.
Something that could put all of us in danger.
I round a corner and see her standing in the doorway of the dining hall, looking back at me.
Her eyes meet mine briefly, and then she turns away.
Violet eyes.
Unusual.
Shadows of Desire: The Shadow Strider's Dilemma
I have never seen eyes like hers before.
Not on anyone who is not from my world.
She is standing with her back to me now, looking at the woman who stands beside her sister.
Her long black hair hides her face from me, but I know she senses my presence behind her.
I can feel it.
The air is thick with tension between us, and I know she feels it too.
My heart pounds in my chest as I stand there, frozen in place, unsure of what to do next.
I am torn between my duty to Elara and my desire for Lyra.
I should not be feeling this way about my wife’s sister, but I am powerless to stop it.
Shadows flicker around me as I stand there, unsure of what to do next.
"Raszire," Lyra's voice cuts through the silence, soft yet commanding.
I step forward, compelled by an invisible force, as she turns to face me with a knowing smile.
Suddenly, the ground beneath us trembles violently, and a crack splits the floor between us, revealing a swirling abyss below.

Elara cries out in terror and stumbles forward.
My heart stops as I lunge for her, catching her just before she falls into the churning depths.
I pull her back from the edge, turning her to face me as the shadows swirl protectively around us.
On the opposite side of the gap, Lyra stands frozen, her violet eyes locked with mine.
A moment passes between us, one in which I know without a doubt that she would not have let her sister fall.
But I will not let anyone or anything come between me and my duty to Elara, no matter how much my heart may desire otherwise.
I take a deep breath and steady myself against the fear that threatens to swallow me whole.
The darkness swirls around me, sensing my turmoil and trying to calm me.
Shadows of Desire: The Shadow Strider's Dilemma
My heart still pounds in my chest, but I feel more in control now.
I look across at Lyra, who has not moved.
Her eyes are still locked with mine, and I know she can see the turmoil inside me.
She knows my duty is to Elara, but she also knows where my heart truly is.
And yet she says nothing.
She simply watches me, waiting for me to make my choice.
"Raszire," Elara whispers, her voice trembling, "what is happening to us?"
I tighten my grip on her hand, glancing at Lyra before answering, "The shadows are restless; they sense the conflict within me."
Lyra steps closer to the edge of the chasm, her voice steady as she says, "Then perhaps it's time you decide which world you truly belong to."

I reach out to her, my voice steady despite the chaos swirling around us.
"What do you know of the shadows' intentions?"
Her violet eyes flicker with uncertainty, and for a moment I think she will not answer.
Then she steps closer to the edge of the abyss, her gaze never leaving mine.
"They seek to test your resolve," she whispers.
A chill runs through me at her words.
I know what it means for the shadows to test my resolve.
They will push me to the limits of my endurance, trying to break me until I am nothing more than a shell of my former self.
And if I fail?
I can feel Elara's eyes on me, watching me intently as I prepare myself for the challenge ahead.
She senses that something is wrong, but she does not know what it is.
She only knows that it has something to do with Lyra and the shadows that swirl around us.
I nod, steeling myself for what is to come.
The shadows will try everything in their power to break me, but I will not let them win.
I will not let them take away my duty or my honor.
Elara clutches my arm tightly as she senses the determination in me.
"Raszire," she whispers urgently, "promise me you'll stay with us."
I nod, but my eyes drift back to Lyra, who stands poised at the brink of the abyss.
Suddenly, a shadowy tendril snakes up from the chasm, wrapping around her ankle and pulling her into the void.
