I was born blind, and my name is Evelyn Blair.
My husband is a wealthy man.
He was the only one to show me love and care in this world.
I never knew how the world looked like, but I was happy with my life.
But then, something miraculous happened.
I could see now.
I saw many things I never expected to see.
My husband had an affair with the housemaid, Nina Brooks.
Nina was not only a brothel, but also a person who made my life miserable by hiding my medication and burning my food in the oven so that my husband would not like me anymore.
My husband didn't know about it, but I knew.
I decided to keep it a secret and pretend as if I still couldn't see.
I wanted to figure out their game.
I needed to know how far they would go with their affair.
It was interesting to see what would happen next.
A few days later, Nina entered my room when I was taking a nap.
I remained motionless.
The clicking of her heels against the hardwood floor echoed in the room, and I knew she was approaching my bedside.
Through barely-opened eyes, I watched as she reached into the pocket of her apron and withdrew a small orange prescription bottle.
My heart medication.
She unscrewed the cap and dumped half the pills into her palm before replacing them with similar-looking tablets from a ziplock bag.
Nina glanced at my face, making sure I was still "blind and sleeping."
I maintained steady breathing, pretending to be unaware of what was happening.
Before leaving, she adjusted my blanket with a false tenderness, her fingers lingering near my throat for a moment.
Later that evening, as we sat at dinner, I turned to my husband with a steady voice.
"Darling, do you think Nina has been acting strangely lately?"
He paused, fork midway to his mouth, and glanced at me with a hint of suspicion.
"Why do you ask? Has she done something to upset you?"
I shook my head innocently.
"No, darling. I just have a feeling. Perhaps she is not as loyal to us as we think."
His expression softened, and he reached for my hand.
"Nonsense, my love. Nina has been with us for years. I'm sure it's nothing. You're just feeling a bit under the weather."
I nodded, pretending to accept his reassurance.
But deep down, I knew the truth.
Nina was not to be trusted.
And neither was my husband, who seemed oblivious to the betrayal unfolding right before his eyes.
The next day passed quietly, with me sitting at my desk in the study, sorting through the day's mail while keeping an ear out for Nina's footsteps.
Bills and catalogs were the usual fare, but then my fingers stumbled upon something thicker and heavier than usual.
A large envelope addressed to me, with a return address from Harrison & Associates Law Firm.
Curious, I carefully opened the envelope and withdrew the contents.
A letterhead bearing the firm's name and logo topped a single page of typed text.
As I read through the letter, my eyes widened in disbelief.
Great-Aunt Margaret had passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind no other living relatives.
And somehow, she had named me as her sole beneficiary in her will.
The inheritance was substantial - several million dollars, to be exact.
I heard Nina approaching from down the hall and quickly slipped the letter back into its envelope, hiding it in my desk drawer amidst a pile of junk mail. The door creaked open as Nina entered with a tray of tea and biscuits.
She set it down on my desk with a clink of fine china before eyeing me warily.
"Is everything all right, ma'am? You look a bit pale," she said, her voice tinged with false concern.
I maintained an unfocused stare into the distance, pretending not to notice her presence or the tea she had just placed in front of me.
It was only when she intentionally spilled some of it onto my hand that I jolted in surprise and jerked away from the scalding liquid.
"Oh dear! I'm so sorry, ma'am," Nina exclaimed with mock distress, reaching out to dab at my hand with a napkin.
