My name is Evelyn Blair.
Everything changed for me when I went to see Dr. Roberts.
It was a beautiful day and my housemaid, Nina Brooks, was with me.
Nina had been a part of my life for some years.
She was the one who guided me in everything I did.
I was blind and had been so for many years.
The doctor bent over me and shone a light into my eyes.
"Tell me, Mrs. Blair, do you see anything?"
I concentrated hard, and suddenly, like a veil being lifted from my eyes, I saw light.
I saw the beautiful face of the doctor and the petite figure of my housemaid standing behind him.
I could hardly believe it.
I kept blinking my eyes as if to say thank you to them for coming back to life.
"What did you say?"
The doctor asked again.
"Yes, I see them. I can even see myself."
I touched my face and saw the scar that had been there since the day I was attacked by hoodlums and left for dead.
The doctor smiled and so did Nina.
"It's a success," the doctor said.
"We will still need to monitor you."
I nodded eagerly.
Seeing Truths
I stood up and my hands reached out to Nina.
The fluorescent lights above were too bright for my eyes, but I was determined to see her.
She stepped back and her curly hair bounced with the movement.
Her fingers were fiddling with the hem of her uniform, a habit I knew well.
Tears filled my eyes, but I could still see her face clearly.
Seeing Truths
It wasn't joy that I saw there, but something else.
Fear, perhaps guilt.
She glanced at the door and then back at me, her lips pressed into a thin line.
The doctor was busy writing on the desk, oblivious to our conversation.
I took another step closer to her, my hand reaching out like a slow-moving snake.
The fluorescent lights cast unflattering shadows on her face, making her appear even more distressed than I knew she was.
My hand moved through the air, still adjusting to its new function of guiding my movements.
Finally, my fingers made contact with the cotton sleeve of her uniform.
Seeing Truths
She flinched but didn't pull away.
The familiar texture was comforting as I leaned forward, keeping my voice low so the doctor wouldn't overhear us.
"What's wrong? You can tell me anything."
Nina's lips parted and then closed again.
