I was blind for thirteen years.
It was a hard life, but I had learned to be content with it.
That was until the day I got my sight back.
It changed everything.
Discovering what my husband, Lucas Blair, was doing behind my back was the beginning of it.
I never knew the world could be so evil.
I thought my disability had exposed me to all kinds of evil, but I was wrong.
My sighted life had just begun, and it was already a mess.
"Mrs. Blair," Nina Brooks, my housemaid, greeted me as usual.
I was in the kitchen, trying to make some dessert for my husband's birthday, which was today.
I had been struggling for nearly an hour to get it done, but all in vain due to my disability.
"Can you help me, Nina?"
I asked her politely.
She was about to respond when we heard a vehicle screech in the distance.
It suddenly halted, and we heard footsteps nearing the house.
It must be my husband returning from work early.
A smile spread across my face at the thought.
Nina grabbed my hand and led me to the sitting room.
"What are you doing, Nina?"
I asked curiously.
"I'm just positioning you, ma'am," she replied.
I could feel her shoulders tensed, and her hands were shaking.
I wondered what was wrong with her.
She placed me on the couch and walked away.
I heard her pacing around the room, but I couldn't see her.
My eyes were still adjusting to the light.
I could only see blurry images, but I was sure it would get better with time.
The door opened again, and I heard footsteps entering the sitting room.
"Hello, my dear," Lucas greeted me.
I smiled at him, but he didn't respond.
He walked over to the couch and sat beside me.
"Are you okay?"
I asked him.
"Yes, I'm fine," he replied.
He was silent for a while before speaking again.
"I have to go out for a few minutes. Wait here."
He stood up and walked away.
I heard the door open and close behind him.
A few minutes later, I heard his car start moving, but it halted suddenly.
I wondered why he was leaving in such a hurry when he had just returned home early.
I decided to look out of the window to see what was happening outside.
As I stood up from the couch, my vision became clearer, and I could see things clearly now. I walked over to the window and looked out of it.
Lucas's car was parked at an odd angle in front of our house, but he wasn't inside it anymore.
I wondered where he had gone to when I saw Nina walking towards his car with a bag in her hand.
She opened the trunk of his car and placed the bag inside it before closing it back again.
She turned around and walked back into the house through the front door.
I wondered what she had been doing with my husband's car when she suddenly stopped in her tracks and pulled out her phone from her pocket before typing something on it frantically.
A message notification pinged from somewhere in the room, and I followed its direction to Lucas's phone on top of the coffee table in front of me.
It was switched off, but it had a preview of an unread message on its screen that read: "Don't forget to pick up the diaper tomorrow on your way home from work. Monday is near."
I pretended to be blind as I watched her pacing around the room, checking her phone every few minutes.
The afternoon sun was shining through the window, reflecting on the silver chain around her neck.
It was the same chain Lucas had given me on our anniversary a few months ago.
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as I realized what was happening.
Nina's phone rang suddenly, and she picked it up.
She listened for a while before speaking in a hushed tone.
I couldn't make out what she was saying, but I knew it wasn't good.
She hung up the phone and looked out of the window nervously.
I could see the fear in her eyes as she paced back and forth in front of the window.
I wondered what was going on.
A car pulled up outside, and Nina startled.
She quickly smoothed out her dress and fixed her hair in the reflection of the window before walking towards the door.
I kept my act up as I heard footsteps approaching the door.
The door creaked open, and I turned my head towards it, keeping my eyes unfocused on whoever was entering.
Lucas walked in, his eyes locking with mine, and I knew the charade was over.
