I was born blind, with my irises a deep brown, almost black.
My name is Evelyn.
Evelyn Blair to be precise.
At least that's what my husband and parents have told me.
Everything they've told me has always been the truth, so I have no reason to doubt them.
I've always relied on my other senses to get through life.
My hearing is exceptional and my sense of smell is even more so.
My other senses, touch and taste, are also more heightened than the average person's.
I can tell when someone is in a room just by their scent, which is why I know when my husband is cheating on me.
I've known for a long time now but have kept quiet about it.
Seeing Truths
I sit at the dining table, my fingers fingering the delicate lace tablecloth that has been passed down from generation to generation in my family.
The table is large and can easily fit eight people.
My husband, Lucas Blair, and I occupy this house on our own, but I still like to set a formal table for the evenings when he comes home from work.
The front door creaks open and I know he's home.
I don't need to see him to know that it's him; I can tell by the way it creaks.
It's a very distinct sound.
His footsteps are quiet as he enters the room but then come to a halt when he realizes I'm sitting at the dining table.
"Hey," he says, his voice deep and smooth.
His footsteps continue, coming around to where I'm sitting.
He leans down to place a kiss on my cheek.

"Hi," I say, smiling up at him, even though he can't see me.
I breathe in his scent—freshly laundered clothes, a hint of aftershave, and something sweet and floral. The sweet scent hits me like a punch to the gut as I realize it isn't Nina's perfume that I'm smelling.
Nina is our housemaid.
She's been with us for years now and wears a light vanilla perfume every day.
I know her scent well but this... this is something different.
Something sickly sweet that makes my stomach roll with nausea.
Lucas tries to pull away from me but I reach out and grab his wrist in my hand before he can escape.
I bring it up to my nose and inhale deeply again.
There's no doubt about it; it's jasmine perfume, not vanilla like Nina wears.
"You're wearing jasmine perfume today?"
Seeing Truths
I ask him, trying hard to keep my voice steady and calm when all I want to do is throw up everywhere.
He clears his throat, stammering over his words.
"I... I... I went to that French boutique downtown today and bought a candle. I thought you'd like it."
I hold onto his wrist tightly, not allowing him to pull away.
"Let me see it."
He rummages in the pocket of his coat and pulls out a small paper bag.
He places it in my hand and I reach inside, feeling the smooth glass of the candle and the wick in the center.
It's definitely a candle but I can't smell anything other than his aftershave and the jasmine on his skin.
I pull the candle out of the bag and run my fingers over the label.
It's definitely French, but there's something else...
I feel along the bottom of the bag, my fingers running over something crinkly.
Seeing Truths
It's a price tag!
And it's not from any French boutique; it's from Nina's favorite discount store. "Lucas," I say, my voice cold and steady.
"You've been cheating on me with Nina."
"No! No, no, no!"
He shakes his head, trying to pull away from me but I hold tight onto his wrist.
"That's not what this is. This is... uh... well..."
He pauses for a second before continuing.
"I have a surprise for you! A trip to Paris! We're going next weekend. First-class tickets, a suite at the Ritz, everything!"
His voice becomes more animated as he talks about our upcoming trip.
"We'll go to the Eiffel Tower and eat croissants for breakfast every day. You'll love it!"
Seeing Truths
I can tell that he's trying to slide the incriminating candle back into his pocket by the rustling of paper.
"Lucas, you can't distract me with Paris when the truth is right here in front of us," I say, my grip still firm on his wrist.
"Evelyn, please, it's not what you think," he pleads, his voice cracking under the weight of his own lies.
"Then tell me what it is, Lucas, because I'm tired of pretending I can't smell the truth."
