A historian from the modern United States, Lin Xuan, is a man of Chinese descent who has traveled to China in an effort to understand more about the development of human societies.
He has a deep curiosity about how various civilizations have evolved over time and has found himself particularly interested in the matrilineal societies that have long fascinated historians around the globe.
Now, he is in Yunnan Province, close to Lugu Lake, where he will begin his journey through the Kingdom of Women.
The kingdom is a matrilineal society founded by the Naxi minority group, and Lin Xuan is looking forward to seeing firsthand how the social development has played out over time.
Lin Xuan’s journey began when he arrived in Baisha Town, at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The town is a popular tourist destination for both locals and foreigners alike, and it serves as a bridge between urbanization and traditional culture.
As Lin Xuan walked through the streets of Baisha Town, he was struck by the juxtaposition of the colorful buildings and towering trees against the snow-covered mountain backdrop.
He was also captivated by the rich Naxi culture that was evident everywhere he looked.
Now, as he continued his walk through the town, Lin Xuan’s attention was drawn to a vendor selling scrolls depicting the history of the Naxi Kingdom.
Baisha Town, Yunnan Province
I am standing in front of a booth in Baisha Old Town.
This town was the capital of the Naxi Kingdom for over 400 years.
That kingdom had been one of the most important places for research on matrilineal societies.
It had been founded in 1271 and fell in 1723.
The Kingdom of Women I am going to visit is what remains of that ancient society.
The word “Naxi” means “people” in their own language.
In front of me are two scrolls painted with people dancing around bonfires.
The vendor told me that these scrolls depict the history of the Naxi Kingdom.
I can see all kinds of people in them: farmers, soldiers, scholars, and rulers each with different clothes, tools, and hairstyles.
People from all around China came to live here during that period, so it makes sense that there would be so many nationalities depicted here.
The vendor says that this scroll tells about how mankind was first created according to Naxi mythology while this other one tells about how humans began living together in villages.
I am a historian from the modern United States.
I am a man of Chinese descent.
This ancient cultural landscape stirs my soul.
I have been studying these kinds of societies for years.
Societies where men and women are equal and women usually have more power.
How did they come about?
How did they work?
How did they disappear?
These are the questions I have been asking.
The man selling the scrolls tells me that they depict people from all walks of life in the Naxi Kingdom.
He says that the scrolls are used to teach the Naxi history to students and that they are also displayed during traditional festivals.
I would love to own one, but they seem too big and expensive to carry back home.
I ask the vendor if he has a smaller one that I could buy to take with me.
He smiles at me and quickly pulls out a third scroll from his stall.
This one shows the different classes in the Naxi Kingdom: scholars, farmers, craftsmen, traders, soldiers, and rulers.
I feel my heart race with excitement.
This is exactly what I am looking for!
There are even brief descriptions next to each class.
I ask the vendor if he could tell me more.
I am fascinated by these intricate drawings of people in this ancient society.
I have never seen anything like it before.
I am curious about how everything works in this kingdom.
The vendor looks at me and sees that I am genuinely interested.
He smiles and suggests that I should take a cup of tea and sit down to really read through this scroll.
He says that it will take some time as a lot of things are written on it.
He adds that the owner of a local tea house made it with aged tea leaves, so it would be best to read it while drinking his tea.
I thank him for his advice and go off to find a quiet place to sit.
I enter a small tea house.
It is not very crowded.
The smell of fresh tea leaves fills the room, making me feel relaxed and comfortable.
I sit down next to a window and turn my head to look outside.
The snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain looks even more magnificent up close.
The summit is shrouded in mist, so it seems like a dragon is sleeping on top of it.
A teapot and a cup are already on the table.
I pour myself a cup of tea and slowly unroll the scroll.
The first few pages are about how mankind was created according to Naxi mythology.
It is interesting, but I need to skip them and move on to the part where people started living together in villages.
When I reach the last page, the sunlight becomes stronger all of a sudden, and a gust of wind blows through the window, making the curtain dance in the air.
I turn my head to look outside only to see that an array of light has appeared outside the window, and a golden dragon is flying through it.
This light is identical to the one I saw when I entered the portal that brought me here!
There is no doubt that it is a portal connecting different worlds.
What kind of world is on the other side of this portal?
I must find out!
You may think I am crazy, but I am not someone who can let things go easily.
I have to know the answer!
I jump up from my seat, leaving the remaining tea and my coat behind.
I grab my backpack and the scroll, open the door, and hurry toward the array of light.
People turn their heads to look at me in confusion, but I don’t care.
The light is very close now.
I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and rush forward.
