The train rocks violently and I grasp the bars of the luggage rack to keep upright.
It’s not the first time it’s happened, but my stomach still lurches.
I glance around, half-hoping someone will have noticed and be looking my way.
My fellow first years are too caught up in their own conversations to pay any attention to me, though.
I breathe out slowly, telling myself it’s nothing.
Just turbulence.
I let my gaze drift over the deep blue velvet seats, the large windows that steam up as the outside air cools rapidly now we’re leaving London behind.
The lamps flickering as the train rocks on its rails.
I searched for a long time after Lucas went missing.
I knew my parents were right, he was gone, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still out there somewhere.
It took me a long time to realise I was actually searching for myself.
When I came back – alive, if not whole – Mum and Dad were there.
Waiting.
Ready to welcome me home.
It took longer for me to realise that I was also waiting.
Secrets of the Cursed Vaults
I lean a little closer to the group of first years sitting on the bench opposite me.
They’re all whispering about the Cursed Vaults, and I’m hoping to overhear something useful.
My heart thumps in my chest as I listen.
‘There’s a secret passage behind one of the bookshelves in the library,’ one of them whispers.
‘But you have to know which one to move, or you’ll end up in a locked room with no way out.’ ‘And there’s a hidden door in the Great Hall that leads to a tunnel,’ another one says.
‘But it’s only accessible at night when the portraits are asleep.’
I frown as I listen.
Could one of these vaults hold some clue to where Lucas went?
I don’t know if I’m excited or scared at the prospect.
Maybe both.
Secrets of the Cursed Vaults
I pull a scrap of parchment from my pocket and scribble some notes with a worn-down pencil stub.
My hand shakes a little as I write, but I can’t stop myself from doing this.
I’ve been searching for so long, and now that I’m finally here, I’m not going to let anything slip through my fingers.
Elara nudges me gently with her elbow.
