The creaking of the old attic roof above us made me pause, clutching the dusty trunk lid mid-air.
"Guys, quiet," I whispered, pointing upward.
Tommy, Jason, and Emma halted their rummaging through the other trunks and boxes, turning to me with curious faces.
"What?"
Tommy mouthed, pointing upward.
I shook my head and lowered the lid back into place.
"It’s nothing. Keep searching, I found something cool."
Tommy arched his brow, but shrugged and returned to his trunk.
"Hey, look at this!"
Emma exclaimed, drawing our attention to a large, rolled-up parchment clutched in her hands.
"What is it?"
Alyssa asked.
Emma unraveled the paper, revealing an old map of Scottsbluff.
"Oh wow!"
Jason said.
"That’s really old. Look at the date, 1885."
"Wow that is old. Let me see."
I said, walking over to where Emma had spread the map out on a trunk.
"Look, it has all these X’s marked on it," Emma said.
"I wonder what those mean."
"Maybe they’re buried treasure," Jason joked.
"Let’s go find out," Tommy said, grinning at us.
"Are you serious?"
I asked.
"Why not? It could be fun," Tommy said.
"We’re not going to find any real treasure," Jason said.
