I rolled over in the bed and glanced at the clock on the nightstand.
10:30 p.m.
I’d been asleep for a couple of hours.
I’d decided to take a nap after I couldn’t get a hold of Lucas.
He’d told me he was going to be busy over the next few days, but I didn’t think that meant he was going to ignore my calls and texts.
I threw the covers off of my body and got out of bed.
I walked over to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water.
As I did, I looked out the window and saw nothing but darkness.
I set my glass of water on the counter and looked around the apartment.
It was bare.
There were no personal touches.
No photos.
No decorations.
Just a few pieces of Lucas’s furniture.
I picked up my phone and dialed Raymond's number, pacing the small apartment as it rang.
The walls seemed to close in around me, the silence between rings deafening.
The call connected, and Raymond's familiar voice greeted me with a hint of concern.
"Misty, what's up?" he asked, his tone laced with a subtle curiosity.
I took a deep breath, trying to condense the chaos swirling in my mind into coherent sentences.
"Lucas is gone," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"He left for Toulouse without warning, and I need to get to the university tonight."
Raymond's pause was palpable, and for a moment, I wondered if the connection had dropped.
Then, his voice returned, measured and deliberate.
"I can pick you up in thirty minutes," he said.
I nodded, even though he couldn't see me, a sense of relief washing over me.
I quickly gathered my belongings, ensuring I had everything I needed for the journey.
My eyes scanned the apartment one last time, taking in the sterile environment that now felt suffocating.
As I locked the door behind me, a sense of urgency propelled me forward.
The cool night air enveloped me like a shroud as I stepped out into the darkness.
The streetlights cast an eerie glow, making the shadows dance across the pavement.
I waited for Raymond's arrival, my eyes fixed on the horizon, my heart pounding in anticipation.
Suddenly, headlights cut through the darkness, and Raymond's car pulled up to the curb.
I didn't hesitate, yanking open the door and sliding into the passenger seat.
"Let's go," I said, my voice firm and resolute.
Raymond nodded, his eyes flicking towards me before returning to the road ahead.
