"Selena!"
"Y-Yeah?"
I looked up at Ashton, who was calling me.
He was sitting in the driver’s seat of our camper, while I was sitting in the passenger seat.
We loved going on adventures together.
We were both okay with not staying in one place for too long.
It made life more interesting.
"Are you sure you want to go to Aloha Hills?
It’s so far away."
"Yeah, I do. I’ve never been there before. And I don’t want to stay in one place for too long."
Ashton nodded and started the camper.
After a few hours, we arrived in Aloha Hills.
I was so happy to finally be here.
I got out of the camper and stretched my body, while Ashton got our stuff out of the back of the camper.
We had a lot of stuff, like my electric guitar and his drums.
None of the other band members ever unplugged my guitar when they used it.
And none of them ever gave me any crap about my clothes or my hair being ripped and shaved on one side.
They just let me be myself, which is why I loved using my electric guitar and playing with them.
They didn’t mind that I had no top on under my jacket, or that my pants were ripped.
My camper was too small for all of us, so I told them that we would just meet up tomorrow for practice.
Scream
I leaned against the hood of the camper, scrolling through my social media while Ashton unloaded our instruments.
I was about to go inside when my phone vibrated.
I looked at the screen and saw that it was Mother.
My stomach twisted into knots as I read her message.
"Mother: I’m bringing Citron and Beatrice to Aloha Hills tomorrow. They need to get out of the house for a bit. I’ll see you then."
I gripped my phone tightly, watching Ashton unload the last of our instruments through the rearview mirror.
He didn’t know about them.
He couldn’t know about them.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard as I debated how to respond.
I didn’t want them here.
Scream
Scream
I didn’t want them to meet Ashton.
The thought of them meeting him made my chest tight.
I took a deep breath and typed back, "Fine, see you tomorrow."
I paced back and forth in our cramped camper, my hands fidgeting with my phone.
Ashton was busy tuning his drums, his brow furrowed in concentration.
The message from Mother kept flashing through my mind.
I glanced at Ashton, his fingers moving deftly over the drumheads.
My throat tightened as I realized he deserved to know the truth.
I couldn’t keep it hidden any longer.
I sat down on the couch, the springs creaking under my weight.
The setting sun cast long shadows through our window, and I could hear the distant waves crashing on Aloha’s shore.
My fingers traced the edge of my shaved haircut, a nervous habit I couldn’t break.
"Ashton, there's something I need to tell you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Scream
He looked up from his drums, concern etched on his face.
"What is it, Selena? You know you can tell me anything."
I grip the edge of the couch, my knuckles turning white as I force the words out.
"I have siblings - a five-year-old brother named Citron and a two-year-old sister, Beatrice."
Ashton's drumsticks clatter to the floor.
He stares at me, mouth slightly open, processing this revelation.
The silence stretches between us like a rubber band about to snap.
When he finally speaks, his voice is quiet.
"How long have you known they were coming?"
I can't meet his eyes as I admit, "Mother texted today. They'll be here tomorrow."
The camper suddenly feels too small, too confining.
Ashton nodded slowly, his gaze steady on mine, and said, "Then let's make room for them."
Scream
After Ashton's acceptance of my siblings, I notice dark clouds gathering outside our camper's window.
The wind picks up, rattling the thin metal walls.
I rush to close all the windows as Ashton quickly stacks his drums against the secured cabinet.
I grab my electric guitar, carefully wrapping the cord around it before placing it in its case.
The first thunderclap makes me jump, and rain starts pelting the roof like bullets.
Scream
We hear something heavy scraping against the camper's side.
Through the window, I spot our awning coming loose, flapping dangerously in the wind.
I rush to grab a tarp from our storage bin.
The wind whips my hair into my face as I stumble outside, gripping the heavy plastic.
Ashton yells for me to come back inside, but his voice is lost in the howling storm.
Rain soaks through my clothes while I struggle with the tarp, trying to secure it over the thrashing metal.
The trees around our camper bend and creak ominously.
Scream
As I reach up to tie down one corner, a sharp crack splits the air.
I turn just in time to see a massive branch hurtling toward me through the darkness.
