I'm Natalia Martinez…
The girl nobody likes or cares about, except for my best friend Shawn and my stepdad.
My mom is always at work or drinking with her friends, so she never really pays attention to me.
I don't really care because I'm not like those girls who want their mom's attention.
I just want my mom to be happy, but I know my mom is hiding something from me.
Something that I wish would never happen to me.
I'm a senior in Cranbrook High School, and I'm so happy that I made it to senior year.
I always thought that I would not make it because I'm weak, but here I am.
I always get bullied, but my stepdad taught me to defend myself now I don't get bullied no more.
I just wish that my mom would listen to me for once.
Now I have to be afraid of my stepdad.
What if he wants me?
What if I'm his next victim?
Now I wish my mom would listen to me…
"Hey Natalia," Shawn greeted me as he sat in our first class, which was math.
I always liked math even though some people say it's hard.
"Hey," I said while I sat next to him and took out my stuff.
Shawn Thompson is my best friend.
He's the only one that knows all about me except my stepdad and mom.
He knows how much I like Vincent Marino.
He's the most handsome guy on earth.
Save Me
We always sit together during lunch.
He likes to sit in a quiet corner in the school courtyard.
The sun filters through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
It's a peaceful place to be.
"Hey, Shawn," I said quietly.
"What's up?"
I looked around us to make sure no one was listening.
"I don't know if I should tell you this, but I'm feeling uneasy around my stepdad."
I whispered.
Shawn looked at me with concern.
"What do you mean?"
I sighed and looked down at my hands.
Save Me
"I don't know; it's just that I feel like he wants something from me."
Shawn looked at me with determination in his eyes.
"Don't worry, Natalia. I'll stay close to you and keep an eye out for you."
I smiled at him.
"Thanks, Shawn. You're the best."
Just then, Vincent walked by us, and our eyes met.
He gave me a shy smile, and my heart skipped a beat.
Shawn leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Natalia, there's something I need to tell you about Vincent."
I blinked, surprised by the sudden shift in his tone.
Save Me
Shawn glanced around us to make sure no one was listening.
"Natalia, I heard Vincent's been asking about you."
My heart skipped a beat.
"Really?"
I asked, trying to sound casual.
Shawn nodded, his expression serious.
"But be careful. He's still Vincent."
I nodded, understanding the warning but unable to suppress the thrill of possibility.
As we stood to leave, Vincent approached us, his usual swagger tempered by an unfamiliar hesitance.
"Hey, Natalia," he said, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Can we talk after school?"
Save Me
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest.
After school, I lingered by the lockers, waiting for Vincent.
The hallway was almost empty, the echo of distant footsteps fading away.
Vincent appeared, his usual confidence tempered by a tentative smile.
"Hey, Natalia," he said, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"I wanted to talk about... us."
His eyes met mine, and I saw a sincerity there that I hadn't expected.
"I know I've been a jerk in the past," he said, his voice hesitant.
"But I want to change. Can we start over?"
He reached out, his hand brushing against my arm, sending shivers down my spine.
I looked up at him, searching for any sign of insincerity.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment, and nodded.
Save Me
We talked for a while longer, and then I walked home, replaying our conversation in my head.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the sidewalk as I approached my house.
I hesitated at the door, feeling a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in my stomach.
My stepdad's car was parked in the driveway, a reminder of the tension waiting inside.
I took a deep breath and opened the door.
The air inside was heavy with unspoken words.
My stepdad sat in the living room, his eyes flicking up from his newspaper as I entered.
His gaze lingered too long on me before returning to his paper.
