Sakura, with the help of her inner voice, Inner Sakura, navigates the challenges of becoming a shinobi and forms a strong bond with her teammates.
When I was little, I asked my mother why she became a kunoichi.
She said, “I wanted to be strong.”
My mother was an excellent kunoichi.
She could make anything a weapon.
And more than that, she was the protecter of our home.
As a child, I always admired her strength.
I wanted to become like her and protect the people of the village.
But no matter how hard I tried, how much I practiced, I couldn’t achieve what my mother did.
The more I tried, the more I realized how weak I was in comparison.
I was just an ordinary girl born to an ordinary family.
Being weak was in my blood.
I didn’t have a special Kekkei Genkai like the Uchiha or the Hyuuga.
I couldn’t summon powerful creatures like Naruto or control chakra like Sasuke.
Would I ever be able to become as strong as my mother?
“Sakura, are you sleeping?”
Kakashi-sensei called out to me.
I snapped awake, looking around at my team members with embarrassment.
Naruto panted as he looked at his palm, “I almost have it!”
He had been trying to master the Rasengan for hours now.
Sasuke stood on the other side of the training ground with his eyes closed.
His Sharingan spun rapidly, but he struggled to keep it steady.
Kakashi-sensei watched them with a keen eye, expecting results, not just effort.
I was supposed to be practicing tree walking using my chakra control.
I would climb up to a high branch and try to balance on one foot without falling.
Though I managed to do it for a few seconds at a time, Kakashi-sensei wasn’t watching me at all.
He never looked at me anymore.
That realization made me panic, and in my panic, I lost my balance and fell down from the tree with a loud thud!
Kakashi-sensei glanced over before returning his gaze back to Naruto and Sasuke, “That’s enough for today.”
Naruto grinned from ear to ear, “How about it, Sakura?
Did you see how far I got with my Rasengan?”
I wanted to tell him that I had been too busy practicing my own techniques to notice his progress.
But the lump in my throat kept me from speaking aloud, and I was suddenly very thirsty.
Picking myself up off the ground, I dusted off my clothes and forced a smile on my face as I nodded to Naruto and Sasuke.
“Good work today,” Kakashi-sensei said before dismissing us for the day.
I walked back to my apartment feeling frustrated and embarrassed by my performance during training.
I had been on Team 7 for over a year now and I still couldn’t impress Kakashi-sensei or my teammates with how much I’d grown as a shinobi.
I felt like I was letting them down every day.
Every time we had a mission, I was the one who couldn’t keep up with the boys or who accidentally tripped over her own feet during combat training.
