I ran as fast as I could, not caring where I was going as long as it was away from the men who were chasing me.
I didn’t think I could run much longer; my legs were starting to feel like lead.
I had been running for what felt like hours, and I was starting to get tired.
I can’t let them catch me; I just can’t.
My life depended on it.
I thought of all the things I could have done differently, things that would have kept me from having to run for my life.
I should have taken the elevator instead of the stairs.
I should have gone back for my phone.
I shouldn’t have tried to reason with the man who had been holding me hostage for the last twenty-four hours.
I tried to push those thoughts out of my mind; they weren’t going to help me now.
Run Girl Run
I stumbled through the glass door of "Lulu's Beauty Salon," nearly knocking over a display of hair products.
The bell chimes above me as two women getting manicures turn to stare.
Behind the counter, a tall woman in a black smock - Lulu - raises her eyebrows at my disheveled state.
Her assistant Nico freezes mid-sweep near the styling chairs.
I grip the counter, trying to catch my breath, aware of how wild I must look in my torn shirt and mud-streaked pants.
Through ragged breaths, I manage to get the words out, glancing nervously at the street through the front window.
Heavy footsteps echo from somewhere down the block.
"Please, you have to help me," I gasp, my voice barely above a whisper.
Lulu leans in, her eyes narrowing with concern. "Who are you running from, honey?"
Nico sets the broom aside and steps closer, his voice steady. "Is it the same people who came looking for you last week?"
Run Girl Run
Lulu locks the front door and flips the "Closed" sign while Nico ushers the remaining customers out through the back.
I slump into a styling chair, my heart still racing.
Lulu circles me, assessing my features with a professional eye while Nico gathers supplies - foundation, concealer, brushes, and a shoulder-length auburn wig from the back room.
"We'll need to hide that stubble first," Lulu says, tilting my chin up.
She starts by cleansing my face, her movements quick but gentle.
Run Girl Run
The cool cream she applies tingles against my skin.
She then applies a thin layer of foundation, blending it seamlessly into my skin.
She follows with concealer, carefully covering any remaining blemishes.
The makeup feels heavy on my skin, but I know it's necessary.
Nico stands nearby, holding the wig on a stand.
He adjusts it slightly, making sure it fits perfectly over my head.
Lulu works methodically, layering foundation over my freshly-shaved skin while Nico adjusts the wig on a stand nearby.
She contours my jaw to appear softer, adds highlights to slim my nose, and carefully applies false lashes that feel heavy on my lids.
I grip the chair arms as she lines my lips, fighting the urge to scratch my face under the thick makeup.
In the mirror, my features blur and shift with each new product.
Nico helps me into a floral dress and adjusts the shoulder pads while Lulu makes final touches.
Run Girl Run
Lulu positions a large mirror in front of me, and Nico steps back to admire our work.
I grip the arms of the salon chair as Lulu positions a large mirror in front of me.
My hands tremble, leaving sweaty marks on the leather.
The reflection shows a stranger - a woman with soft features, glossy lips, and flowing dark hair.
Run Girl Run
I touch my face hesitantly, watching the feminine figure in the mirror mimic my movements.
Nico adjusts the wig one final time while Lulu touches up a smudge of lipstick.
The door chimes suddenly, making us all freeze.
Through the window, I spot two men in dark suits scanning the street.
Lulu whispers urgently, "Stay calm, and don't make eye contact."
Nico nods towards the back door, his voice low but firm. "We can slip out through the alley if they come in."
Run Girl Run
I swallow hard, my heart pounding. "What if they recognize me anyway?"
Lulu places a reassuring hand on my shoulder, her voice soft but steady.
"We'll handle it. Just follow our lead."
The door swings open, and a man steps inside, his eyes scanning the room.
He spots me and Lulu, and his gaze lingers for a moment before he looks away.
I feel a surge of relief as he approaches the counter.
"Excuse me," he says, his voice low and gravelly.
"I'm looking for someone. A man with short hair and a black jacket. He was last seen coming in here."
Lulu's expression is calm, her voice even.
"I haven't seen anyone matching that description."
The man's eyes flicker towards me again, and I hold my breath.
Run Girl Run
For a moment, I think he's going to ask about me, but instead, he nods curtly.
"Okay. Sorry to bother you."
He turns and leaves, closing the door behind him.
I let out a sigh of relief as Lulu pats my shoulder.
Run Girl Run
"That was close," she whispers.
Nico glances at the clock on the wall, his expression serious.
"We need to get you out of here before they come back."
Lulu nods, her voice urgent.
"We'll take the underground passage to the old subway tunnels."
Nico grabs a flashlight, his tone decisive.
Run Girl Run
"It's risky, but it's our best shot at getting you to safety."
