River’s wolf was always watching me.
I’d seen it in the way his eyes tracked my every move, because even when River wasn’t looking at me directly, I could feel it.
Living next door to the alpha wolf of a powerful pack had definitely made my life more interesting.
And to be honest, it had made me a little obsessed with him too.
I tried to tell myself that it was just my psychic powers acting up.
After all, he’d only been living next door for a couple of weeks.
But the truth was, I didn’t think I’d ever get used to River Blackwood.
He was tall and muscular and oh so sexy, with dark hair and the most intense eyes you’d ever seen.
I’d gotten a really close look at those eyes recently and found them to be a warm, hazel color.
They were pretty, but they were also the eyes of a predator.
He was an alpha, after all.
That meant he was in charge.
It also meant he was a guy who liked to take care of what belonged to him.
That was one of the most important things about being an alpha, River had told me once when we were working together on a case.
And as far as River was concerned, I belonged to him because we were mates.
It was something that had happened long before we even met, according to River’s younger sister Luna.
The two of them were wolves—like real ones—and they were part of a pack that had been living in this area for hundreds of years.
I was just a human—or at least that was what I appeared to be on the outside—but I also had psychic abilities that made me special or different depending on how you looked at it.
But despite our differences, River and I were more alike than not.
We were both survivors who had overcome lives filled with hardship and loss to become stronger, better people—or rather, wolves—than we would have been otherwise.
River had been looking out for himself and his sister ever since he was young.
He’d been forced to do things he wasn’t proud of in order to survive.
But he’d made it through those difficult times by embracing his wolf and becoming the alpha he was always meant to be.
I’d had a similar journey.
My psychic abilities were part of what had helped me to survive growing up in foster care.
But it was my connection with River that made me feel more alive than I’d ever felt before.
It was also one of the reasons why I’d been so desperate to help him find his sister Luna when she’d gone missing recently.
Her absence was weighing on River heavily—and it was weighing on me too.
I missed her so much that my heart ached.
Luna was like a sister to me, and not having her around was just wrong.
She was such a kindhearted person who always saw the best in people.
And she was so adventurous too.
