I am a 19-year-old boy living in Japan.
I am pregnant.
And the father of my baby is my boyfriend, Justin, who is also a boy.
He is 20 years old and lives in Michigan, USA.
We are in a long-distance relationship.
I am now ten weeks pregnant.
Justin has to go back home, but we video call every day.
My boyfriend calls me "darling" as his nickname for me.
He is very happy to become a dad.
I have two best friends, Mika and Yui.
They know I am pregnant, but they do not know that I am in a relationship with a boy from the United States.
Mika knows I am pregnant and keeps it a secret from everyone else.
Yui knows I am pregnant, but she wants me to have an abortion because it's not safe for a man to be pregnant in Japan.
I don't want to abort my baby.
My family doesn't know that I am pregnant.
If they find out, they will kick me out of the house.
My boyfriend will come back to visit me again in three months.
I will give birth to our baby in six months.
Will everything go smoothly?
I hope so.
It was June 1st when I found out I was pregnant.
I had morning sickness for about two weeks.
I couldn't eat anything and lost some weight.
Ru & Justin
I sit at my desk after dinner.
My parents are watching TV downstairs.
I open my laptop and scroll through pregnancy websites.
My phone buzzes with a text from Justin.
"Darling, what trimester are you in now?"
I open multiple tabs on my laptop and type "trimester" into the search bar.
The first result is from a pregnancy website.
According to the website, there are three trimesters in a pregnancy.
The first trimester is from week 1 to week 12.
The second trimester is from week 13 to week 26.
Ru & Justin
The third trimester is from week 27 to week 40.
I count the weeks on my fingers.
If I am ten weeks pregnant now, that means I am still in the first trimester.
I type a response to Justin's text message.
"Darling, I'm in the first trimester."
Just as I finish typing, I feel a wave of nausea wash over me.
I quickly grab the small trash bin I keep beside my desk and retch into it.
After a few minutes of vomiting, I wipe my mouth with a tissue and take a sip of water from my glass. I look back at my phone and see that Justin has sent another text message.
"Darling, are you okay? Is morning sickness still bothering you?"
I sigh and type out a response.
Ru & Justin
"Darling, yes. Morning sickness is still here."
I press send, knowing this secret life will soon demand more than just whispered words and hidden truths.
I stare at the screen of my phone, Justin's messages filling the chat log.
"Darling, are you still feeling sick?"
"Darling, I hope you're doing okay."
"Darling, please let me know if there's anything I can do."
My stomach churns again, and I feel another wave of nausea wash over me.
I quickly grab the trash bin next to my desk and retch into it.
After a few moments, I wipe my mouth with a tissue and take a sip of water from the glass on my desk.
I look back at my phone and see that Justin has sent another message.
"Darling, are you still there?"
I take a deep breath and open the video chat app on my laptop.
Ru & Justin
Justin's face appears on the screen, his eyes filled with concern.
"Hey, darling. How are you feeling?" he asks softly.
I shift in my chair, feeling a bit uncomfortable at the term "darling."
It's not that I don't like it; it's just that it feels a bit strange to be called that by someone other than my parents.
"Could you call me Ru for now?"
I ask quietly, glancing at the closed door of my bedroom.
Justin's expression changes to one of understanding.
He knows that the walls in my house are thin and that my parents could easily overhear our conversation if they were nearby. "Okay, baby," he whispers back, using his usual nickname for me instead.
I relax slightly at his words and nod in response.
"Ru, I've been thinking," Justin says, his voice steady yet hesitant.
Ru & Justin
"About what?" I ask, trying to keep my tone light despite the tension in my chest.
"What if we told your parents about us before the baby arrives?" he suggests, his eyes searching mine for a reaction.
I groggily open my eyes, blinking away the sleep.
My laptop is still perched awkwardly on my stomach, the video call screen glowing in the dim morning light.
Justin's sleeping face fills the frame, his features soft and relaxed.
He must have dozed off while watching over me through the screen.
I shift slightly, trying not to wake him, but the movement causes my laptop to slide down my stomach.
The noise startles Justin awake.
He blinks at me through the screen, his eyes heavy with sleep.
"Ru," he mumbles, his voice thick with drowsiness.
"Are you okay?"
I nod, touching my belly gently.
Ru & Justin
"I'm fine. Why are you still on video call?"
Justin rubs his eyes, yawns, and stretches.
"I wanted to make sure you were okay through the night," he says, his voice softening as he wakes up fully.
I smile, touched by his concern, but a part of me feels the weight of the secret we still carry.
"Justin, I've been thinking too," I say hesitantly, "maybe it's time we tell Mika and Yui everything."
