Albert

He is a prince from a royal family. He is curious, adventurous, and selfconscious. Albert prefers to stay at home with books but secretly enjoys sneaking out to experience the world beyond palace walls. He is excited and nervous about his first trip outside the kingdom as his parents' companion on a state visit to the U.S.A. Albert struggles with the secrecy of using a fake name (Nero) and being treated like an ordinary citizen, rather than a prince.

I am Prince Albert, the son of King Max and Queen Trina.
My dad is a king, so that makes me a prince.
I've never been to school or out in public because my parents are afraid someone will try to hurt me.
I don't mind staying at home and reading books all day.
I am not really interested in going out and playing with other kids.
I am self-conscious about being a prince and that people will treat me differently.
I have a cousin named Lexington who is fun and lively.
Sometimes I sneak out of the palace with him to go on adventures, but we have to be careful not to get caught.
One day, my dad tells me that he, my mom, and Lexington are going on a trip to the U.S.A., and I can go with them!
I've never been on a plane or out of the country before.
My dad says we will have to use fake names so that no one will recognize us.
Lexington will go by the name Leo, and I will go by the name Nero.
My mom will take her close friend Trina Johnson as her companion on the trip, but she has told the palace officials that she is going alone.
We are going to visit several cities in the U.S.A., including New York City, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.
Royal Secrets
I stand in my private bathroom, hands gripping the marble counter as I stare at my reflection in the mirror.
"Hi, I'm Nero," I whisper to myself, cringing at how unnatural it sounds.
Through the open door, I can hear Lexington practicing his new name in the bedroom.
"Hey there, I'm Leo," he says in an exaggerated American accent.
"I'm Leo," he repeats, trying out different tones and inflections.
I take a deep breath and try again, this time a little louder.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Nero."
My voice cracks on the last word, and I wince.
Dad appears in the doorway behind me, a grin on his face.
"Hey there, I'm Vern!" he says in a perfect American accent.

I turn to him, feeling embarrassed but also determined to get this right.
I straighten my posture and try again, attempting to mimic Dad's casual tone.
"Hi, I'm Nero," I say, forcing the words out of my mouth.
Dad chuckles and claps me on the shoulder.
"That's better, son. Now, let's get packing."
I turn and walk into my royal chambers, a large room with a four-poster bed and a dresser.
My wardrobe is filled with formal suits and ties, but Dad has advised me to pack casual clothes for the trip.
I open the doors to my closet and dump the contents of my wardrobe onto my bed, creating two mountains of clothes.
Most of my outfits scream "prince," but I'm determined to find something that will allow me to blend in with the Americans.
I start by tossing aside my ceremonial suits and velvet capes.
Next, I discard my collection of fancy ties and pocket squares.
As I dig deeper into my closet, I finally come across some plain t-shirts and jeans.
I hold up a pair of faded blue jeans and examine them carefully.

They look comfortable, but I'm not sure if they're suitable for a prince.
Just then, Lexington bursts into the room wearing a baseball cap and a pair of sneakers.
He looks like he just stepped off the streets of New York City. "Hey there, Nero!" he says, laughing at the growing pile of clothes on my bed.
"Need some help packing?"
I nod gratefully as he begins to sort through the clothes with me.
"What do you think of this?"
I ask him, holding up a black t-shirt with a picture of a cartoon character on it.
Lexington raises an eyebrow and shakes his head.
"Nah, man. You don't want to wear that. It's too childish."
He picks up a plain white t-shirt instead and hands it to me.
"This one's better. And you should definitely bring some shorts. It's going to be hot in the U.S.A."
I take the shirt from him and add it to the pile of clothes that have made the cut.
As we pack, Lexington teaches me some American slang words like "dude" and "buddy."
He also shows me how to do a high-five, which is apparently a popular greeting in the U.S.A. Once I've selected all of my clothes, I carefully fold them into my suitcase.
At the bottom of the bag, I hide a small crown that Dad gave me before we left for our trip.
Royal Secrets
Lexington notices the crown and smirks, "You really think you'll need that, Nero?"
I shrug, feeling a bit defensive. "It's just in case... you never know when you might need to remind yourself who you are."
He nods, understanding. "Yeah, but remember, this trip is about being someone else for a while."
