I was dreaming of a dark, quiet forest when the sound of pounding hooves jolted me awake.
I sat up in bed, my long silver hair spilling around me like a river of moonlight in the pale light of the setting sun streaming through my window.
The hooves drew closer, and I wondered who it might be.
It was rare for anyone to arrive at the Valtor Kingdom on horseback.
Most travelers came by carriage or on foot.
And it was even rarer for a horse to gallop up to the castle.
Who could this be?
And why were they in such a hurry?
I threw off my blanket and slipped out of bed, quickly dressing in the first gown I found in my wardrobe.
I didn’t bother with shoes or a cloak.
The dream had left me feeling restless and ill at ease.
And now the pounding hooves were making my heart beat too fast.
I hurried to my window and flung it open.
A cold breeze swept in, carrying the sound of clanging swords.
My stomach dropped.
What was happening?
And then I saw him – a dark figure on horseback, galloping toward the castle with a group of guards at his heels.
He didn’t seem to care that he was heading straight for the moat.
