It’s a little past five when Mike and I get back to the flat we rent.
We’ve been working late a lot recently, and I’m not feeling particularly great.
I was supposed to meet my dad for a drink last night, but I’d forgotten.
I hadn’t even called him to let him know I wouldn’t make it.
I feel terrible about it and hope he’s okay.
He’d had a bit of a health scare recently, and I should have been there for him.
I also should call my mom tonight and see how things are at home, but I don’t feel like it.
I’m tired and not in the best of moods.
"Are you going to ask her?"
Mike breaks into my thoughts, and I look at him blankly.
He grins at me, and I realize he’s talking about Laura, the girl from work I’d mentioned earlier.
"Tomorrow," I say.
"I’m going to ask her out tomorrow. For drinks."
"You sure that’s a good idea?" he asks.
"Why wouldn’t it be a good idea?"
I ask him.
"Nothing. Just making sure you know what you’re getting yourself into."
"I can handle myself," I say dryly.
"Why would you think I couldn’t?"
"No reason at all," he says with a grin.
"You seem to do okay with the ladies."
"Do I?"
I ask, and he chuckles.
"You do indeed," he says.
"But Laura isn’t exactly your usual type, is she?"
I sink into our worn leather couch and run my hand through my hair.
He’s right.
She’s not the type of girl I usually date.
She’s not tall and athletic like the girls I usually go for.
She’s not supermodel pretty, and she doesn’t have a body that would make a man weep with lust.
So what is it about her that makes me want to ask her out?
I look at Mike, who’s sprawled in his favorite armchair, watching me closely.
"She’s different," I say slowly.
"I don’t know. She just is."
"How?"
"She’s always smiling. And she remembers everyone’s coffee order. She even remembers that I like mine black."
Mike nods, waiting for me to continue.
"And last week when we were working late on the Henderson account, she stayed behind to help me finish it up. She didn’t have to do that."
"Did you ask her to?"
"No," I say, sitting up straighter.
"She offered."
"Okay," Mike says.
"And?"
"And she has this laugh," I say, remembering how it sounded when she laughed at something one of the guys said at lunch today.
"It’s infectious."
Mike raises an eyebrow at me, and I realize how stupid that sounds.
"Sounds like you’re smitten," Mike teases, leaning forward with a knowing look.
I roll my eyes but can’t help the small smile tugging at my lips.
"Maybe I am," I admit quietly, feeling a warmth spread through me at the thought.
I sit at my desk, staring across the office at Laura.
She’s at her workstation, organizing some files and putting them away in a filing cabinet.
Mike nudges me with his elbow, and I turn to look at him.
"Lunch break," he mouths, pointing to his watch.
I nod and stand up, stretching my arms over my head.
Laura looks up and sees us.
She smiles brightly and waves.
"Hey," she says as she walks over to us, a stack of reports in her hand.
"Hi," I say, trying to sound casual despite the fact that my heart is racing.
"Hey, Laura," Mike says, flashing her his usual charming smile.
"Hey, Mike," she says with a smile of her own.
"I’m heading to the break room. Would you like some coffee?"
My heart sinks as I realize she’s not asking me to join them.
"Sure," Mike says easily.
"I could use another cup."
Laura nods and turns to walk away.
Mike and I follow her, but we hang back a bit, giving her some space.
I watch as she walks into the break room and starts making coffee.
I can see her through the glass walls of the break room, and I watch as Mike walks in and sits down at the table.
Laura brings him his coffee and then makes one for herself.
She sits down across from Mike, and I watch as they talk.
Mike is acting weird, making baby faces at her and talking in a high-pitched voice.
Laura looks uncomfortable, but she’s still smiling.
Mike stands up and pretends to cry, waving his arms around like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
Laura looks at him like he’s lost his mind.
I cringe as I realize what he’s doing.
This is Mike’s go-to move when he’s nervous around a girl he likes.
He thinks it’s funny, but really, it’s just pathetic. The office secretary walks by the break room and gives Mike a weird look.
"Mike, what are you doing?" Laura asks, her smile faltering as she glances around to see if anyone else is watching.
"Just trying to lighten the mood," Mike says with a sheepish grin, sitting back down and rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Well, it's working," she replies with a small laugh, though her eyes flicker over to me as if seeking an escape.
