For a whole month, I thought I had five roommates who were guys.
I was so happy to finally have found a place where I could be myself and not be judged for being different.
It was my first time living away from home and family, and I thought I had made the right decision until one night I found out they were all girls.
I was shocked, but they explained to me why they had disguised themselves as guys.
Each of them had her own story and reason for hiding her true self.
Fira was the first girl I met, and she was so shy and sensitive.
She told me that she had been raped in her first year of college, and the experience had left her traumatized and scared of men.
She started dressing like a man to keep away from men and to feel safe.
When I found out they were girls, I was confused, but I didn't know how to react.
I was still trying to process everything when Mary approached me.
She took my hand gently and explained that she wasn't a victim of rape, but she had an abusive ex-boyfriend who had terrorized her for years.
She thought that disguising herself as a man would keep him away from her.
I listened to her story, and I felt sorry for her.
I didn't know what to say or do, but I knew I had to help them somehow.
The next day, I went with Mary to the college authorities, and we reported her ex-boyfriend.
After helping Mary report her ex, I went back to the house and found Fira in the kitchen.
She was sitting alone at the table, staring blankly at a cup of coffee.
Her hands were shaking slightly as she gripped the mug.
I sat down beside her, keeping a respectful distance.
She flinched when I cleared my throat but relaxed when she saw it was me.
We sat there for a few minutes in silence until she finally spoke.
"My nightmares are coming back," she whispered.
I didn't know what to say, so I just listened.
"I thought I was over it, but now it's all coming back. I feel like I'm trapped again. I want to trust people again, but every time I see a man, I get scared."
Her voice cracked as tears started falling from her eyes.
"I'm here for you, Fira," I said softly, reaching out to gently touch her hand.
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mix of hope and fear.
"Do you really think we can live without hiding?" she asked, her voice trembling.
I took a deep breath before speaking.
"I don't know, Fira, but I do know that you're not alone. I've been through something similar."
She looked at me in surprise, and I continued.
"In high school, I was cornered by an older student in the locker room. He threatened to hurt me if I didn't do what he wanted. I was so scared and felt so helpless. For years, I blamed myself for what happened."
Fira's eyes widened as she listened to my story.
"But I went through therapy and learned to heal," I continued.
"I realized that it wasn't my fault and that I deserved to be safe and happy. And now, here we are. We can help each other heal."
When I finished speaking, Fira reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
For the first time, I saw a glimmer of hope replace the fear in her eyes.
