Cody’s voice sounded distant, as if he were standing on the other side of the chutes.

But I knew he wasn’t.

He was right beside me, here in the dirt, kneeling in the same spot he’d been in since I’d started riding.

Same as he’d been for plenty of other riders before me.

He was a legend in his own right as a bull rider, but he was doubly so as a coach and mentor to riders like me.

I took a deep breath, trying to find my center.

This was it, the ride of my life, and I was scared shitless.

Not because I was riding Red Rock, the bull that had killed Mark Ferguson just a few months ago.

Not because I was riding for the championship.

But because I had a bad feeling in my gut.
