Mei Lin
Mei Lin was the first to notice something was wrong.
She always was the most observant of us, with eyes that could pick out a school of fish hiding behind coral from fifty feet away.
They were the sharpest eyes of anyone I’ve ever met.
I had just pulled in a large catch, enough to feed my entire village for a day, maybe two depending on how much of it was smoked, dried or salted, so I was feeling pretty good about myself.
I gave a shout to alert anyone who might be nearby before beginning to haul in my net.
Mei Lin was standing at the edge of the water, just where the sand and rocks meet, scanning the horizon as she always did when she was out here with me.
