Chapter 1
I was cleaning the beach when I found a ring.
It was a simple silver band, with a smooth black stone set in the center.
I picked it up, and it glowed for a moment before going dark again.
Weird, I thought, but it was probably just my imagination.
I slipped it on my finger and went back to work.
The sun was setting by the time I finished cleaning the beach, and I started heading home.
I found a ring at the beach today.
It was an odd thing, completely black except for a smooth silver band—silver except for what looked like a pair of engravings: 0.5 and 2.5.
At least, I thought they were engravings—looking closely, they seemed more like numbers and letters than any language I knew, but then again, there were two of them in such close proximity to each other that it seemed unlikely that they weren't the same thing.
But when I picked up the ring, intending to wash away some of the sand with my water bottle before taking it home to see if my mom could clean up the metal or maybe take a look at what kind of stone that was in it—
—it started glowing.
And then, most strangely of all: as soon as I had the ring on my finger again, it began displaying a series of strange symbols that looked like nothing so much as digits rotating in three dimensions around one another.

I had no idea what I was looking at.
But all the same, I had a bizarre feeling that this was something important—that this was something that would be very important to have someday—and so even though I couldn't understand its use or its purpose or what any of these numbers meant—couldn't even guess—I slipped it onto my finger and felt power surge through me like nothing I'd ever experienced before.
The following day, when I went back to the same beach to see if there were more rings waiting for me in the sand… there weren't any.
Feeling like that was important somehow, that it meant something even though I didn't know what it could mean—that there should be some purpose behind why this ring had found me rather than someone else—I set out to find my first summer job instead of searching for more rings (though every time I passed by water during my search, whether it be a river or a pond or a fountain, I checked).
By dinner time on Friday night, exactly one week after finding the first ring washed up among some seaweed on the shore… I'd already been working at Yashiro Middle School as their janitor for an hour and a half when my shift ended at five o'clock because they only paid minimum wage to start (and this job looked like it might actually be easy), but since school wasn't in session over summer break yet and wouldn't be for another week (which is why there weren't any students around)…

Instead of heading straight home, I decided to stop by that same beach again, clean it up a little bit.
Maybe I'd get lucky and find another ring.
It was still light out when I got there (though the sun was setting) and there were a few people still hanging around—mostly families with kids who were reluctant to leave and teenagers who were trying to eke out as much time away from their parents as they could—but since I didn't have anything better to do with my time, I just nodded at them in greeting and set to work picking up trash and gathering it into bags.
And then, after a few minutes of work… there was a gleam among the rocks near a cliff face that I recognized from one week before, and when I picked it up, it was another ring.
The exact same ring, down to each engravement—and when I touched it, it did exactly what the first one had done: displayed a series of numbers that made no sense to me at all.
I'd been intending to go home after finding this second ring, but then screams echoed down from above me: people standing on top of the cliffs that overlooked this beach were pointing at something toward the docks where boats came in and shouting.
A villain attack?
