Riley Ashford and Luna Carmichael are best friends, but Luna is irritated by Riley's womanizing ways. However, when Luna transfers to Stratford Academy, she and Riley are forced to see each other every day, which leads to them facing their forbidden feelings for each other.
“You’re a girl!”
The boy laughed, and I frowned.
How dare he laugh?
I didn’t like the fact that Luna was crying.
She wasn’t supposed to cry when she was hurt.
I had learned that the hard way myself.
“Wimp!”
He pushed her, and she stumbled, her tiny body falling to the ground.
No one else seemed to care about what was happening.
No one was stopping him.
It was just me and Luna.
“Hey!”
I ran forward and kicked him in the shin as hard as I could.
He startled and turned his eyes on me.
“What do you want?”
“I want you to stop being mean to Luna,” I said bravely, my heart pounding in my chest.
I was so small, so tiny, and he was so much bigger than me.
But that didn’t matter.
I would always protect Luna.
He laughed like I had said something funny, and then raised his hand and pushed me away.
The boy was bigger than me, but I was quick.
I ran forward and kicked him again, harder this time, in the shin.
He yelled and stumbled back, his hands dropping to his hurt leg.
“You little brat!”
he yelled, raising his hand to hit me.
But all of a sudden a small hand shot out and caught his wrist in midair, stopping him before he could hurt me.
“If you’re going to hit someone, hit someone your own size.”
Luna said bravely, her eyes sparkling with anger as she glared at him.
The boy flushed red, his face turning redder and redder until it looked like it might explode from the pressure of his rage.
“Fine, if you like the wimp so much, why don’t you go play with him?”
He yelled at her before running away, his face red with anger and embarrassment.
Luna didn’t cry anymore after that day; she only got angry.
She was always angry at something or someone—whether it be a student or even a teacher.
Sometimes I wondered if anything ever made her happy.
But it didn’t matter what Luna felt.
It didn’t matter if she was happy or sad or angry or scared, either.
I would always be there for her, just like she would always be there for me.
Even though we were complete opposites, we had been best friends since kindergarten when I had stood up to a bully who had been picking on her.
At the time I was so small that most people thought I was a girl myself.
But even though I was so tiny, I still thought it was wrong for people to pick on others who were weaker than they were.
Luna had been crying because the boy had been mean to her, but when he tried to hit me she stood up for me.
“If you’re going to hit someone, hit someone your own size.”
She said firmly, catching his wrist before he could hurt me any further.
