I am Maria, a 61-year-old flowers vendor at Quiapo Market, Manila.
I was born in a poor family and my life was never easy.
I got married to a good man, had three kids, and we were living happily.
But life is unpredictable.
One day, my husband had an accident; he was run over by a bus while crossing the street.
The doctor said he would survive, but he needed a long treatment which we couldn't afford.
We didn't have enough money for his operation and other medical expenses.
I didn't know what to do, but I didn't give up.
I continued working at the market, selling flowers every day, hoping that I could earn enough money to pay for my husband's treatment.
But it was not enough.
Even though I worked hard every day from early morning until late night, I still couldn't earn what I needed.
My husband died because of my failure to pay for his treatment.
Losing my beloved husband was like the end of the world for me.
It broke my heart into pieces and I didn't know how I would be able to continue my life without him.
But I had no choice; I had to continue working for the sake of my children.
I didn't want them to suffer like me.
I worked hard every day to give them a better life, but it was not easy.
Rich Foreigner's Unwanted Bride
I noticed a young woman with blonde hair walking between the market stalls.
She was wearing a black dress and high heels, which made her stand out among the local shoppers.
As she approached my flower stand, I could see that her face was flushed and she looked disoriented.
She stumbled a few steps before reaching my stand, and I quickly set down the sampaguita garlands I was arranging.
I moved closer to her, concerned by her labored breathing.

The woman tried to speak, but all that came out were broken words in English.
She reached out to grab onto my stand for support, but instead knocked over a bucket of roses.
Before the flowers could hit the ground, I caught her arm as she started to collapse.
Supporting her weight, I guided her to the small wooden stool behind my stand.
She swayed unsteadily, her expensive black dress soaked with sweat.
I reached into my market bag and pulled out my water bottle - the one my daughter had filled for me this morning.
The woman's breathing came in short gasps as I uncappped the bottle.
Her mascara had smeared beneath her eyes, and her face was flushed bright red.

When I held out the water, her manicured hand trembled as she reached for it.
I maintained my grip on the bottle, helping her bring it to her lips.
As she drank, her eyes met mine, silently pleading for help.
