I'm evil.
Smart, cunning, always one stap ahead of others.
I don't care what I had to do for my revenge.
I didn't care if I had to become a beast for that.
I didn't care if I had to kill someone or someone's loved ones.
I didn't care if I had to burn someone's town or city or destroy someone's army.
If someone asked me, 'Do you have a conscience?'
Then my answer would be, 'No, I don't.'
Because if someone had something that was very important for me, something that could increase my power up to 400%, then I didn't care what I had to do to get that thing.
And that thing was a magical core.
A very rare magical core.
Only one person in this world had that type of magical core, and she was Theia Therenor, the princess of Penkos.
But she was already married to Prince Leo of Penkos before I could even lay my hand on her.
And thus, according to the rules of our world, a person's spouse became their half, and when a person got married, then their spouse's magic core became their power and vice versa.
And thus, Theia's magical core became Leo's...
F*ck!
All my plans were ruined because of that naive guy named Leo.
I hated him so much that I wanted to kill him with my sword right now.
But I knew that if I did that, then my revenge would not be fulfilled!
My revenge would not be fulfilled!
Revenge in the Shadows
I stood at the window of my chambers in Penkos Castle, looking at the guards changing their shifts.
A messenger from the Kingdom of Myreth was waiting for me in my study.
I had spent weeks building a connection with them through some discrete channels.
The Kingdom of Myreth was a small kingdom, and they were not powerful like Clarus or Penkos, but they were clever and cunning.
And that was why I wanted to make a deal with them.
I broke the seal on the letter and read their terms.
They wanted military intelligence about Penkos' northern defenses, which was the border between Myreth and Penkos.
In return, they would support me in my cause.
I drafted a reply and gave it to the messenger.
He left through the servant's passage, which was hidden behind a bookshelf in my study.
Revenge in the Shadows
I invited Seia to my study for afternoon tea, and I arranged the documents about northern trade routes in plain sight.
And I kept the Myreth correspondence beneath them.
The door opened, and she entered with her usual cold demeanor.
But I saw her eyes scanning every corner of the room.
I poured her favorite jasmine blend, and she took a sip.
It was the beginning of winter, and the winter festival was approaching.
I knew that Seia would not waste any chance to discuss military strategies with me.
So, I asked her about her plans for the festival, but she steered the conversation toward border security again.
I told her what she wanted to hear.
I was a genius strategist, and I had a lot of knowledge about military tactics.
Revenge in the Shadows
And thus, I could easily make Seia believe that I was a dutiful fiancé who wanted to help his fiancée in her duties.
But in truth, I was merely setting the stage for the chaos that would soon unfold.
I sat in my chambers, going through the guest list for Leo's upcoming birthday celebration.
I had already marked the nobles who would be attending.
And I was drafting letters to select guests, those whose loyalties I could sway with promises and bribes.
Each correspondence had subtle hints about Leo's incompetence as a future heir.
Between writing, I practiced controlling my expression in the mirror, perfecting the mask of a gracious future brother-in-law.
Revenge in the Shadows
When Theia passed my door, I forced myself to bow politely rather than reveal my hatred.
I knew that soon, the entire kingdom would be dancing to the tune of my carefully orchestrated deception.
I froze for a moment when Seia's words broke through my reverie, but I regained my composure quickly, lifting my teacup to cover my reaction.
She reached into her sleeve and pulled out a letter, one of the communications from Myreth.
I had burned them in the fireplace, so I couldn't understand how she had gotten it.
She kept her eyes on mine as she placed it on the table.
I took a sip of tea to stall for time.
The guards outside were not rushing in to arrest me.
So, Seia wanted something.
I decided to test her by revealing only a partial truth.
"Myreth is willing to offer military support."
Seia didn't move.

Revenge in the Shadows
Her fingers traced the rim of her teacup, but her eyes didn't leave my face once.
I finished speaking, and she slid the letter across the table without saying a word.
Her red eyes were studying my face for any sign of deception.
I kept my expression neutral.
I knew that Seia was a genius in dark magic, but she was also a genius in reading people.
She could see through any mask.
But I was a sociopath, and I had been hiding my true nature for years.
So, I could fool her into believing that I was telling the truth.
The letter sat on the table like a loaded gun.
Seia's fingers were still tracing the rim of her teacup, but her eyes were watching me closely.
I knew that she wanted to see if I would try to deny it or run away.
But I didn't do anything.
I kept my eyes on hers, sipping my tea slowly.
Revenge in the Shadows
I knew that if I tried to run away, she would expose me as a traitor and kill me before I could reach the door.
And if I tried to deny it, she would use her magic to extract the truth from me.
So, I decided to play along with her game.
Seia set her teacup down slowly, and the clink of the cup hitting the table echoed in the room.
Her red eyes gleamed with dark satisfaction as she pulled out another document from her sleeve. It was a detailed map of the underground passages beneath the castle, including several that I didn't know existed.
Revenge in the Shadows
I leaned back in my chair, studying her face.
Her expression was cold and calculated, with no sign of weakness or fear.
The letter and map lay on the table between us, accusingly.
I could feel the tension in the room, like a thick fog that was hard to breathe through.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the floor, and the silence stretched uncomfortably.
Revenge in the Shadows
I waited for Seia to make her next move, but she just sat there, watching me closely.
Her eyes seemed to bore into my soul, as if she was searching for any sign of deception.
I could feel her magic probing at my mind, but I kept my thoughts carefully guarded.
I knew that she wanted something from me, or else she would have exposed me to Leo already.
