My name is Zheng Bocheng.
I am, if not for my current predicament, a college student majoring in psychology.
I come from a wealthy family and do not need to worry about money.
Well, at least that was the case until recently.
My life was normal, just like any other person.
I went to school, studied for exams, read books, watched movies, played games, and so on.
But one day, all of that changed.
It started with a car accident.
I was driving back home from the library when a truck came out of nowhere and crashed into my car.
The world went black after that.
When I woke up, I was lying on my back with my head throbbing in pain.
The sky above me was blue and clear with not a single cloud in sight.
Confused and disoriented, I slowly sat up and looked around.
I saw nothing but grass and unknown flowers in every direction with no buildings or signs in sight.
Perplexed and still trying to recover from my accident, I stood up and looked around again, hoping to see something familiar.
That was when I saw him.
He was walking towards me and seemed to have just seen me himself.
Surprised, he quickened his pace and reached me in no time.
"Are you okay? That was quite a crash."
I study the approaching figure.
He is wearing a familiar college uniform, but it is stained with dirt and grass.
As he gets closer, I realize that I know him.
He is in my psychology class, and we have seen each other many times before.
However, we have never spoken to each other directly.
His name is Luo Feng, and he is known as the class troublemaker.
He always sits in the back row and plays on his phone during class.
I have heard rumors that he bullies freshmen, but I do not know if they are true.
As he approaches me, I tense up slightly.
He stops a few feet away from me and raises his hands to show that he means no harm.
"Luo Feng," he says simply, then glances around at our strange surroundings.
"I saw your car flip on University Road before everything went dark. Looks like we both ended up... wherever this is."
"Wherever this is, it isn't home."
Luo Feng and I walk cautiously through the field, looking for any signs of civilization.
The strange flowers emit a faint purple glow as the sky darkens.
I notice that the ground feels unusually soft under my feet, almost spongy.
I mention this to Luo Feng, who stops in his tracks to examine the soil.
He crouches down and presses his hand against the ground.
"Something's not right," he mutters, pulling his hand back quickly.
The earth beneath us starts to vibrate subtly.
Small pebbles bounce on the ground, and the purple flowers begin swaying without any wind.
The vibrations intensify gradually, making it difficult to maintain our balance.
As the tremors grow stronger, several purple flowers sink into the ground, revealing a metallic glint beneath.
Luo Feng drops to his knees and starts brushing away the loose soil with frantic movements.
I steady myself against a nearby rock and watch as he uncovers what appears to be a circular metal hatch, about two meters in diameter.
The surface is covered in strange geometric patterns that seem to pulse with a faint purple light matching the flowers.
Luo Feng runs his fingers along the edge of the hatch, searching for any opening mechanism.
After a few moments, he finds a recessed handle.
He grips it firmly and pulls, his muscles straining against the weight.
The hatch creaks open with a rush of stale air.
"Do you think we should go down there?" I ask, trying to mask the unease in my voice.
Luo Feng looks at me, his usual bravado replaced by a rare seriousness.
"We might not have a choice if we want to find out what's really going on here."
I shine my phone's flashlight down the hatch, illuminating a metal ladder that descends into darkness.
The air wafting up carries a strange, metallic scent mixed with something else I can't quite identify.
Luo Feng tests the first rung with his foot.
It holds firm, so he begins his descent.
I follow closely behind, my hands gripping the cold metal tightly.
As we climb deeper, the purple glow from above grows dimmer, and the only light comes from the beam of my phone.
The ladder seems to stretch on forever in the darkness.
Suddenly, another tremor hits, stronger than before.
We both grab the edges of the hatch for support as small rocks and dirt shower down from above.
Without waiting any longer, Luo Feng starts climbing down again.
I follow closely behind him.
My hands grip the cold metal tightly as I descend into the unknown.
The purple glow from above grows dimmer with each step down.
The ladder seems to stretch on forever in the beam of my phone light.
Just when I think it will never end, I hear the sound of rushing water below us.
It is muffled and distant but definitely there. "Do you hear that?"
Luo Feng shouts up at me over the sound of his own footsteps on the ladder rungs.
"Yes!" I shout back, my voice echoing off the walls of the shaft we are descending into.
The sound grows louder with each step until it feels like we are walking through a waterfall itself.
Finally, just as suddenly as it started, everything goes silent again except for our breathing and footsteps on metal rungs beneath us.
The hatch above us slams shut without warning, plunging us into darkness once more.
"Did you see that?" Luo Feng's voice cuts through the darkness, tinged with urgency.
"I didn't touch anything," I reply, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Then someone—or something—else must be down here with us."
I grip the cold metal rungs tighter as Luo Feng climbs down ahead of me.
The beam of my phone light catches glimpses of strange markings etched into the walls of the shaft we are descending.
They look like symbols, pulsing with a faint purple light that matches the flowers above.
The rushing water sound grows louder again, deafening in its intensity.
Twenty feet down, Luo Feng stops abruptly, his foot hovering over the next rung.
"Look at this," he whispers, pointing to where the water noise originates.
I shine my light in that direction, and it reveals a horizontal tunnel entrance cut into the wall of the shaft.
The opening is just large enough for us to squeeze through on our bellies.
Without hesitation, Luo Feng drops to his stomach and crawls into the tunnel.
I follow closely behind him, my heart pounding in my chest. The air inside is stale and musty, filled with a metallic scent that makes my lungs burn.
As we inch forward, I can feel the ground trembling beneath us.
It is as if whatever lies ahead is causing the earth itself to shake with anticipation.
Suddenly, another tremor hits, more violent than any before it.
I hear rocks falling from the ceiling above us, their impact echoing through the darkness like thunderclaps.
Luo Feng freezes in front of me, his body rigid with fear.
"What's wrong?" I whisper urgently, trying not to let my voice betray my own panic.
He does not respond but instead inches forward slowly until he reaches a bend in the tunnel.
Then he turns back towards me with a look of awe on his face.
"You won't believe what I'm seeing," he says quietly, gesturing for me to follow him. I crawl forward cautiously until I reach his side and peer around the corner into an underground chamber unlike anything I have ever seen before.
The room stretches far beyond what my phone's light beam can illuminate, filled with channels of glowing liquid that flow through transparent pipes suspended high above our heads.
The pipes lead to a central column covered in those same pulsing symbols we saw earlier on the walls of the shaft we descended through.
As I watch in amazement, another tremor strikes and the liquid inside those pipes surges violently against their glass confines before settling back down again like an angry sea during a storm.
"Luo Feng, what is this place?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper amidst the eerie glow.
"I think it's some kind of power source," he replies, eyes wide with a mix of fear and fascination.
"But why would it be hidden down here, and who built it?"
We stand there at the entrance of the chamber, watching as the glowing liquid pulses through the glass pipes above us.
The central column emits a low hum that vibrates through my chest.
As we cautiously approach it, the symbols begin pulsing faster, their purple light intensifying until it is almost blinding.
The air around us grows thick with an electric charge that makes my skin tingle.
Luo Feng reaches out to touch one of the pipes, but I grab his wrist before he can make contact.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" he asks, his voice laced with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
Before I can respond, the humming noise coming from the central column suddenly increases to a deafening pitch.
The liquid in the pipes begins flowing more rapidly than before, creating a strobe effect that makes me dizzy.
