The world ended the day the acid rain came.
It started on the third day of the apocalypse and rained down for seven years.
Most of the world’s population above the age of sixteen perished.
The few that survived below that age, found that they had developed abilities.
Some could control fire, others could read minds, and others could heal with a mere touch.
The world was forever changed, and those that survived were left to pick up the pieces and try to rebuild.
I was one of those people.
I woke up, lying in my bed, when the world ended.
I was fifteen at the time and already in my last year of high school.
The moment the asteroid hit, I felt it.
A wave of energy washed through me, carrying with it the emotions of every person around me.
I sat cross-legged on the floor of my dimly lit room, surrounded by candles.
My eyes were closed, and my hands rested on my knees.
I was trying to focus on the power that had developed inside of me.
The power of telepathy.
It was a curse and a gift, all wrapped into one.
I could hear the thoughts of every person around me, but I couldn’t turn it off.
It was like a never-ending stream of consciousness, flooding my mind with their deepest desires and darkest fears.
It was overwhelming, and I didn’t know how to control it.
I took a deep breath in through my nose and out through my mouth, trying to focus on the thoughts that were closest to me.
They were chaotic and jumbled together, making it impossible for me to make sense of them.
I clenched my fists in frustration as I tried to focus on one thought at a time.
Jaxon’s thoughts were the easiest to pick out.
He was always thinking about me, worrying about me, and wanting to protect me.
His thoughts were like a beacon in the darkness, calling out to me.
I reached out with my mind, trying to grab onto his thoughts and pull them closer to me.
"Are you there, Ava?" Jaxon's voice echoed in my mind, tinged with concern.
"I'm here, Jaxon," I replied, relief washing over me as his familiar presence steadied my thoughts.
"I think I've found a way to help you control it," he continued, his determination cutting through the chaos.
I took a deep breath, letting his words wash over me.
Jaxon was always steady and calm, even in the face of danger.
He was my lifeline, my anchor in the storm.
"Picture a wall," he instructed, his voice clear in my mind.
I nodded, even though I knew he couldn’t see me.
I pictured a wall in my mind, tall and imposing, blocking out the thoughts that were invading my mind.
The wall was made of bricks, each one perfectly placed on top of the other.
I pictured it growing taller and taller, until it surrounded me on all sides.
The thoughts that had been invading my mind started to recede as the wall grew taller.
They were still there, but they were muffled now, like they were coming from far away.
I felt a sense of relief wash over me as the mental noise receded.
I nodded again, knowing that Jaxon could sense what I was feeling.
"I think it’s working," I replied, taking another deep breath in through my nose and out through my mouth.
Jaxon’s presence in my mind grew stronger as he reached out to me.
He was always there for me, no matter what.
