When I was five years old, my mother held me in her arms and took me to the town square.
All the children of the right age in the town had gathered there, and most of them had already cried and made a scene before leaving.
I didn't understand what was happening.
I just knew that I was being taken away from my warm bed and my father's embrace, and I didn't like it.
As we waited in the square, more people came, and the air grew thick with anticipation.
Suddenly, a loud voice rang out, "Start the soul test!"
Seven rays of light shot up from the ground, enveloping seven children each.
The adults watching on the sidelines were filled with excitement and worry.
This was a crucial moment for them, as it would determine their child's future prospects.
As it turned out, not a single one of those seven children had a good martial soul, and they were all plunged into despair.
Rebirth as a Strongest Dragon God
I stood at the edge of the testing circle, my small feet shuffling against the cobblestones.
The light beckoned, its warm glow pulsing like a heartbeat.
Mother's grip on my shoulder tightened, her fingers trembling.
Around us, parents whispered and pointed, their faces a mix of pity and impatience.
The failed children stumbled away from their circles, some crying, others blank-faced.
Rebirth as a Strongest Dragon God
A town official approached, his ceremonial robes swishing against the ground.
"Step forward, child," he commanded, gesturing to an empty circle.
The light grew brighter, more insistent.
My legs felt heavy as lead.
I hesitate at the circle's edge, my small fingers clutching the hem of my worn tunic.
The official's stern gaze bears down on me as whispers ripple through the crowd.
Mother's grip loosens, her hand gently pushing me forward.
The ground beneath the circle pulses with a soft, rhythmic glow that reminds me of fireflies in our garden.
Other children watch from their circles, some already displaying floating weapons or creature forms above their heads.
Rebirth as a Strongest Dragon God
Fighting back tears of uncertainty, I shuffle one foot forward, then the other.
The circle's boundary tingles against my skin as I cross it.
The testing circle's light intensifies, bathing me in a warm embrace.
I close my eyes, focusing inward as the official's voice guides me.
"Close your eyes and concentrate on your inner energy. Let it flow through you."
A faint warmth spreads from my chest to my fingertips, making them tingle.
The crowd falls silent, watching intently as I try to channel whatever power lies within me.
My hands tremble, palms facing upwards as if beckoning something to materialize.
Mother's sharp intake of breath makes me push harder.
The energy pulses erratically, like a flickering candle flame.
Finally, a few wisps of green light flicker between my palms.
Whispers of disappointment ripple through the crowd.
Rebirth as a Strongest Dragon God
The official marks something on his scroll, shaking his head.
"Is that all you can muster, child?" the official asks, his voice laced with disdain.
Mother steps forward, her voice steady despite the quiver in her eyes, "Please, there must be some mistake."
The official sighs, glancing at her with a mix of pity and finality, "I'm afraid there's no mistake; your child's martial soul is too weak for any significant path."
