The attic was musty, filled with the scent of decay and lost memories.
I rummaged through the old trunks, the dust flying around me and settling on my skin.
God, my grandparents were pack rats.
I sneezed.
"What the hell?"
I muttered, squinting through the gloom.
The light from the bare bulb flickered, making eerie shadows on the walls.
I pulled out another trunk, lifting the lid to find yet more clothes.
Where were they going to put all this stuff?
My grandparents had lived in this house for less than ten years before they died.
They had no kids, and yet there were dozens of boxes of clothes, books and trinkets.
I searched for anything of value, but there was nothing.
Just more and more junk.
I dropped the lid and turned away from the trunk, kicking boxes out of my way.
There had to be something here worth selling.
I needed cash to pay Mia back for my new laptop, and I still owed her for last month’s rent.
"Ah ha!"
I lifted the lid of a small trunk, pushing aside layers of tissue paper to find a gold chain with a large pendant attached.
"Yes!"I lifted the chain over my head, letting the pendant settle on my chest.
It felt heavy, substantial.
