Mark Thompson

Janet Thompson

Lily Thompson
scared, and trusting. Lily calls her father Mark during the storm, seeking comfort and reassurance. She relies on her father for protection and feels safe when he promises to come for her. Her presence drives Mark's actions as he battles through the storm to reach her.
"Just a minute, sweetie. Daddy's on his way," I say into the phone, holding it against my ear as I glance over at the road conditions.
It’s a mess.
"Daddy says Lily on the other side of the line.
Hi daddy.
I’m stuck with Janet Thompson, my sister-in-law.
She’s a nice lady, and I know she’s taking good care of my little girl.
But I know my daughter, and she needs her daddy in times like these.
"Yes, baby. It’s me. I’m going to be there soon, okay?"
I reassure her, doing my best to keep my voice calm and steady.
The truth is I’m driving through a severe storm, and the roads are treacherous.
There’s hardly any visibility, and I’m having to go slow in order to keep from sliding off the road.
I grip the steering wheel tightly, my knuckles turning white with tension.
"Please come soon, Daddy," Lily begs, her little voice trembling with fear.
"I want to go home."
"I’m almost there, baby," I tell her, trying to put on a comforting tone.
Just a few more miles…
"I love you," she says before hanging up the phone.
I sigh heavily as I tuck the phone into my pocket.
Now I just hope she can stay brave until I get there.
Throwing the phone on the passenger seat beside me, I focus back on the road ahead.
A few minutes later, I pull into Janet’s driveway, the tires crunching on the wet gravel.
I can see them standing under the covered porch, waiting for me.
Janet is holding an umbrella, and Lily is clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit to her chest.
She looks scared and worried.
I quickly grab my jacket from the backseat and throw it on as I climb out of the car.
The rain hits me like a ton of bricks as I run to where they’re standing.
I pull my jacket tighter around me as I try to shield myself from the storm.
Janet opens her umbrella and holds it over Lily’s head as she guides her toward my car.
The wind is so strong that it’s almost blowing us backward, and I have to fight against it in order to make my way to the car door.
Janet opens the door and helps buckle Lily into her booster seat before pulling her into a tight hug.
"Be safe, sweetheart," she whispers into Lily’s ear as she smooths a hand over her daughter’s hair.
"Daddy, why did you and Mommy have to fight?" Lily asks, her eyes wide and searching.
I freeze for a moment, caught off guard by the question.
Janet looks at me knowingly and says softly, "She overheard more than we realized."
I nod slowly, my throat tightening with emotion.
"I’m sorry, Janet. I’ll talk to her."
She nods and gives me one last look before turning to walk back to her house.
I shut the car door behind her and slide into the driver’s seat.
Turning to look back at Lily in the rearview mirror, I can see that she’s still clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly to her chest.
The rain is pounding against the roof of the car, making it sound like a drumbeat.
I can see Janet standing under the covered porch, watching us as we pull out of the driveway and start down the road.
After a few minutes of driving, I pull over into a parking lot and unbuckle my seatbelt before climbing into the back seat beside Lily.
Her little hands are still gripping that stuffed rabbit tightly, and her eyes are red from crying.
The dome light casts shadows across her face as she looks up at me expectantly.
"Lily, sometimes grown-ups have disagreements, but it doesn't mean we don't love each other," I say gently, trying to find the right words.
"Is Mommy mad at you?" she asks, her voice small and uncertain.
"No, sweetheart," I reply softly, "we're just figuring things out, and we'll always be here for you."
I can see the relief in her eyes as I give her a reassuring hug.
I watch through the rearview mirror as Janet hurries through the rain to Lily’s door, her umbrella blown inside out by the wind.
She opens the door despite it and leans in, pulling Lily into a tight hug.
Lily’s small arms circle Janet’s neck as her aunt whispers something in her ear that makes her smile.
Janet’s hair is soaked through, but she doesn't seem to mind as she gives Lily’s rabbit a playful pat.
The moment stretches on until a crack of thunder makes us all jump.
Janet gives Lily one last kiss on the forehead before stepping back and closing the door firmly behind her.
"Daddy, will you and Mommy be happy again?" Lily asks, her voice tinged with hope.
I pause, choosing my words carefully.
"We're working on it, sweetheart, and no matter what, we'll always love you more than anything."
