Mia.
I stared at the scientist in front of me, my heart racing, my pulse pounding.
I could feel the heat everywhere in my body, the flush spreading up my neck as I gazed into his eyes.
I knew The Prototype had matched us for a reason.
I just didn’t know what that reason was.
But I was determined to find out.
Because right now?
I was falling deeply in love with him.
And I could see the same emotions reflected back at me.
The Prototype didn’t want us to fall in love with each other.
But it was too late.
We were already gone, lost in our own little world.
And I never wanted to leave.
Eamon’s eyes locked onto mine, and he smiled, his face softening as he reached for me.
I stepped back, my fingers trailing along his arm.
The heat of his body seeped into my skin, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through me.
I knew we couldn’t stay like this forever.
We had to get back to work.
But I couldn’t bring myself to move away from him.
Not yet.
I glanced around the lab, taking in the rows of workstations and the humming machinery.
The security cameras mounted in each corner seemed to pulse with an accusing red light, as if they could see right through us.
I cleared my throat and took a step back, trying to compose myself.
"We should get back to work," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Eamon nodded, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Right," he said, his voice low and husky.
"I’ll get back to my station."
I watched him walk away, feeling a pang of sadness wash over me.
I wanted to reach out and touch him again, but I knew I couldn’t.
Not here, not now. I walked over to my workstation and sat down, trying to focus on the data in front of me.
But my mind kept wandering back to Eamon, and the way he had looked at me just moments before.
I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks as I thought about it, and I knew I had to get a grip on myself before someone noticed.
I took a deep breath and tried to focus on my work, but it was no use.
My mind was racing, and all I could think about was Eamon.
I glanced up at the security cameras again, wondering if anyone was watching us right now.
The lenses seemed to be staring right at me, their cold mechanical eyes recording every move I made. My tablet chirped with an incoming message, and I quickly checked it.
It was from The Prototype - a reminder that we were expected to maintain professional boundaries at all times while on duty.
I deleted the message without reading it all the way through, but my hands were shaking as I picked up my coffee mug and took a sip.
Eamon returned, his voice barely above a whisper, "Mia, we need to talk about what The Prototype really wants from us."
I looked at him, my heart skipping a beat, "Do you think it knows we're more than just colleagues?"
He nodded slowly, his expression serious, "I think it planned for this all along; we're part of something much bigger than we realized."
I pull up the security footage on my monitor, studying the patterns of camera movement while pretending to analyze data.
Eamon stands at his workstation, deliberately keeping his distance but occasionally glancing my way.
I notice a consistent three-minute gap when Camera 4 pans to the eastern corner - a blind spot we could use.
Taking careful notes on my tablet, I map out the surveillance schedule.
When Eamon walks past to refill his coffee, I subtly slide the tablet toward him.
His fingers brush mine as he takes it, sending electricity through my skin.
