Two kingdoms were at war.
I hated it.
My cousin did too.
We both knew it was stupid, but we had no control over it.
Our fathers were the kings and our loyalty was to them, no matter what.
We would never be disloyal, no matter how much we hated the war, so we did what we could to help our sides win.
But we both despised the senseless destruction and loss of life.
We met whenever we could, in secret, to talk and share our hatred for the war.
It was a strange comfort, but it was something we both needed and looked forward to.
I would always look for her when I could, and I would always look over my shoulder to make sure I wasn't followed and caught.
I knew she did the same.
If our fathers found out about us meeting, they would be furious and possibly disown me.
I couldn't care less, but my cousin might.
Her parents were a lot stricter than mine.
She was a princess of Alania and I was a princess of Eldoria.
Princesses on Both Sides of the War
I wait until nightfall when the castle guards change shifts.
There's a brief window of opportunity between the old guard leaving and the new guard taking their place.
It's a small window, but it's enough for me to slip out unnoticed.
I pull on my dark cloak and make my way through the servant's corridors, avoiding the main hallways where I might be seen.
The kitchen is quiet, only embers left in the hearth from the day's meals.
I slip past the sleeping cook and out into the garden.
The loose stone in the garden wall is my escape route.
I press on it, and it swings open, revealing a narrow passageway that leads to the forest.
My heart is pounding as I make my way through the trees, ducking behind hedges and statues to avoid detection.
I've memorized the patrol routes over months of secret meetings, but I still can't shake the feeling that I'm being watched. The forest path is treacherous in the dark, but I know every root and stone by heart.

I've walked this path so many times that I could do it in my sleep.
Finally, I see the old oak tree looming ahead, its massive trunk splitting into three distinct branches.
I reach for the lowest branch, my fingers finding the familiar grooves in the bark.
I test each hold carefully, making sure they'll support my weight before I pull myself up.
The wood is rough against my palms, and I wince as a splinter catches under my fingernail.
The leaves rustle around me as I climb higher, the branches swaying beneath my weight.
Finally, I settle into my usual perch, fifteen feet above the ground.
Princesses on Both Sides of the War
From here, I can see the faint outline of both castle walls in the distance - Eldoria to the east, Alania to the west.
I lean back against the trunk of the tree, adjusting my position so I can scan the western path where Briar usually appears.
"You're late," I whisper as Briar emerges from the shadows, her cloak billowing behind her.
"I had to dodge a patrol," she replies, breathless and slightly annoyed. "But listen, there's something you need to know—Father is planning an attack at dawn."
I shift on the rough bark, moving closer to her.
The branch creaks beneath us, and dried leaves rustle in the night breeze.
Her face is half-hidden in shadow, but I can see the faint glint of tears in her eyes.
"He's gathered his best men," she continues, her voice barely above a whisper.
"They're planning to take the eastern flank at dawn. If they succeed, Eldoria will be vulnerable from the north."

I reach out, my hand finding hers on the branch between us.
Our fingers intertwine, and she falls silent for a moment.
Her breath catches, and I can feel the tension in her body.
I lean forward, drawn by an impulse I can no longer ignore.
I pull back abruptly, my mind racing.
The eastern flank - where our defenses are weakest.
I run through the guard rotations in my head, counting the hours until dawn.
There's not much time.
Briar grabs my sleeve as I start climbing down, her fingers trembling.
"Be careful," she whispers, her eyes wide with fear.
I nod, then descend quickly, ignoring the rough bark scraping my palms.
At the base of the tree, I break into a run, no longer caring about stealth.
The forest blurs past as I sprint toward the castle, branches whipping my face.
The urgency in Briar's voice echoes in my mind as I race through the trees.

"Wait!" she calls after me, her voice barely carrying over the rustling leaves.
I pause, turning back to see her silhouette against the moonlit sky.
My feet carry me back toward her without conscious thought.
She stands frozen, her cloak billowing in the night breeze.
The forest seems to hold its breath as I close the distance between us.
My hands find her shoulders, trembling slightly as I draw her into an embrace.
Her body is warm against mine despite the cool night air, and I can feel her heart racing.

The scent of jasmine from her hair fills my senses as I lean close to her ear.
"Stay safe," I whisper, my voice catching.
I force myself to release her, though my fingers linger on the edge of her cloak for a moment too long.
The fabric slips through my grasp as I turn and break into a run once more.
My boots crunch on fallen leaves, and the sound echoes through the quiet forest.
My lungs burn as I sprint through the darkness, ducking under low-hanging branches and leaping over exposed roots I've memorized from countless midnight meetings.
Ahead, the castle's stone walls rise like a specter from the trees, their battlements silhouetted against the star-studded sky.

Behind me, I hear the soft crunch of Briar's footsteps fading in the opposite direction.
Her words echo in my mind like a mantra: "At dawn...the eastern flank..."
The fate of Eldoria rests on the edge of night.
I burst through the forest edge, my lungs burning as I sprint across the open field toward the castle gates.
The torches lining the walls cast flickering shadows on the ground as I run.
Ahead, I see two guards standing at their posts, hands resting on the hilts of their swords.
As I approach, I rip back my hood, letting the torchlight illuminate my face.
"Princess!"
one of them calls out in alarm.
My legs shake as I slow to a stop before them, gasping for air.
Through ragged breaths, I grab the senior guard's arm.
"Sound the alarm," I command, my voice strained from exertion.
"Alania attacks at dawn. Eastern flank."

The guard's eyes widen, and he nods sharply.
"Understood, Your Highness," he replies, turning to his companion.
"Raise the signal; we must alert the entire garrison immediately."
I race through the castle's winding corridors, my boots echoing against stone floors as servants and guards flatten themselves against walls to let me pass.
Outside the council chamber, two guards stand at attention with crossed spears blocking the entrance.
I slow to a stop before them, my chest heaving.
"Princess Elara," I say, my voice hoarse from running.
"I must be admitted at once."
They exchange glances, then nod in unison.
"Yes, Your Highness," one guard says, stepping aside to open the heavy oak doors.
Beyond them, I hear my father's deep voice speaking about trade routes and border security.
The other guard remains in place, his spear still blocking my path as he regards me with concern.
My cloak is torn and dirty from running through the forest, and my hands are scraped raw from catching myself when I stumbled.

My hair must be wild and unkempt from the wind, and my eyes feel wide with fear and urgency. I reach out and grab the door handle anyway, pushing it open despite the guard's hesitation.
He calls after me as I enter, "Your Highness!"
But I ignore him and step into the room.
Inside, the council chamber is filled with members of our kingdom's highest governing body: nobles who have served our family for generations, military leaders who have fought alongside my father in countless battles, and advisors who have shaped our kingdom's policies since before I was born.
At the head of the long wooden table stands my father, King Arin III of Eldrida.
His deep voice fills the room as he discusses strategies for strengthening our trade relationships with neighboring kingdoms.
My sudden entrance causes him to pause mid-sentence as all eyes turn toward me.
"Elara?" he asks, confusion etched on his face.
"What brings you here?"
I take a deep breath to steady myself before speaking.
Princesses on Both Sides of the War
"Father, Alania plans to attack at dawn on the eastern flank," I announce, urgency lacing my words.
The room erupts into murmurs of disbelief and concern, but my father's gaze remains fixed on me, his expression shifting from confusion to determination.
"How do you know this?" he demands, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade.
