Hui
I woke up and found myself in the trunk of a car.
I was curled up like a shrimp, my hands protecting my head, and my body involuntarily twitching.
The trunk was small, and I couldn't move at all.
Suddenly, it opened, and a young man with a hat on his head looked down at me.
He had a pair of big sunglasses on, and I couldn't see his eyes clearly.
"Are you OK?"
He asked me in simple Chinese.
"I'm fine."
I answered in English.
"Please let me out!"
He reached out and helped me out of the trunk.
I looked around and found myself in a big forest.
There were tall trees everywhere, and I couldn't see any buildings at all.
The young man closed the trunk and turned to me.
"Who are you?"
I asked him in English.
"My name is Caleb. What about you?"
"I'm Hui, a 44-year-old Chinese woman."
I told him my name and age without thinking.
"Nice to meet you, Hui."
He nodded at me and stepped back.
I stumbled backward and hit a tree trunk.
My legs were soft, and I could hardly stand up straight after being curled up in the trunk for so long.
Caleb didn't come closer to me, but he stood in front of the car, blocking my path.
"Why did you kidnap me?"
I asked him.
"I'm sorry."
He took off his sunglasses, revealing a pair of blue eyes that were a little tired.
"I saw you leave Harvard's international student office with a stack of documents. I thought you were the child of some wealthy Chinese donor."
He spoke English slowly, as if he had learned it by rote.
"I followed you and waited for an opportunity. I didn't expect you to get into the car so quickly. I was afraid you would notice something was wrong, so I drove away quickly."
He paused and took a deep breath.
"I need money. I owe someone a lot of money."
His voice trembled slightly, and his hands fidgeted with the car keys.
I noticed that his knuckles were bruised, as if he had been in a fight recently.
Suddenly, we heard the sound of a car engine coming from the direction of the forest road.
Caleb snapped his head in that direction, his body tensing up immediately.
"Is that them?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Caleb nodded, his eyes darting between me and the approaching vehicle.
"We don't have much time; you need to trust me if we're both going to get out of this."
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the forest.
My legs were still unsteady, causing me to stumble over exposed roots and fallen branches.
The sound of car doors slamming echoed behind us.
Heavy footsteps crunched through dead leaves, getting closer with each passing second.
I tried to keep up with Caleb's pace, but my dress shoes weren't made for running on uneven ground.
When I tripped again, he wrapped his arm around my waist to steady me.
"Stay close," he whispered urgently, leading me behind a massive oak tree.
We pressed our backs against the rough bark, holding our breath as voices called out nearby.
The voices faded, but the tension in the air remained, leaving us with no choice but to move deeper into the shadows of the forest.
Exhausted from running, I followed Caleb as he pushed through the dense undergrowth.
Branches scratched at my arms, and the hem of my silk blouse caught on thorns.
The path grew narrower until it was almost invisible, marked only by occasional breaks in the foliage.
My shoes were soaked through, and my feet ached.
Caleb stopped abruptly, pressing a finger to his lips to signal silence.
Through the trees, I saw a small wooden structure with darkened windows.
He pulled me down into a crouch behind some bushes.
We watched and listened for several tense minutes before he whispered, "It's safe."
"Why are you helping me now?" I asked, my voice tinged with suspicion.
"Because I realized you're not who I thought you were," Caleb replied, his eyes softening.
"And maybe... maybe I don't want to be the person I've become."
