It was a typical Wednesday afternoon when I decided to drop by the bookstore to grab a few gifts for my mom and sister.
I wasn’t in any hurry, so I decided to grab a cup of coffee and browse through the secondhand bookshelves.
That’s what I loved about this store; they had both new and used books.
I’d been coming here since my freshman year, and I never left empty-handed.
After grabbing my coffee, I walked over to the romance section—my favorite—and started scanning the shelves.
I wasn’t particular about what kind of romance I read, as long as it had a happy ending.
That’s all that mattered.
I needed my fairy tale.
I was so engrossed in looking at the books that I didn’t even notice someone walking up and standing beside me until they spoke.
"Excuse me, but can I ask you something?"
I turned around and found myself staring into the most beautiful brown eyes.
They were framed with thick lashes that I envied.
Her hair was also brown, but with subtle highlights of red that shone under the artificial light of the store.
"Sure," I said, trying to play it cool.
"Are you finding everything okay? You seem a little lost."
I chuckled and ran my hand through my hair.
"Yeah, I’m good. Just looking for a gift."
"Oh, cool. What kind of gift are you looking for?"
I raised an eyebrow at her.
"You’re not a employee or anything, are you?"
She shook her head and smiled.

"No, I’m not. I just like to help people."
I shifted my weight and gestured at the romance shelves.
"Well, I’m trying to get a gift for my mom. She loves these cheesy stories, but I never know which ones to pick."
Her eyes lit up as she scanned the titles.
"Oh, I love romance novels! Let me see what we have here."
She started running her fingers along the spines of the books, pulling out a few that caught her eye.
"Okay, this one is about a woman who falls in love with her best friend’s brother," she said, holding up the first book.
"And this one is about a man who falls in love with his boss’s daughter."
She held up the second book and smiled.
"And this one... well, this one is about a woman who falls in love with her neighbor. It’s a classic."

I barely registered what she was saying, too busy watching her face light up as she talked about the books.
The way her hair fell across her cheek when she tilted her head to read the back cover.
The way her lips curved into a smile when she talked about the characters.
It was adorable. "So, which one do you think your mom would like?"
I blinked and looked at the three books in front of me.
"Oh, um... I don’t know. They all sound good."
She laughed and picked up the third book.
"Well, this one is definitely my favorite. It’s a little bit cheesy, but it’s also really sweet."
She held it out to me.
"I think your mom would like it."
I took the book from her and smiled.
"Thanks for your help."
She nodded and turned to walk away, but then stopped and looked back at me.
"You know, if you ever need any more recommendations, you can always ask me."
I smiled again and nodded.
"Will do. Thanks again."
As she walked away, I couldn’t help but watch her go.
There was something about her that drew me in.
Maybe it was the way she talked about books with such passion.
Or maybe it was the way she smiled at me like I was the only person in the world.

Whatever it was, I couldn’t deny that I was intrigued by this girl. Jamie
I couldn’t believe how animated I’d become while talking about those romance novels with that guy at the bookstore.
I hadn’t even realized how much I was gushing until he’d looked at me with such amusement on his face.
I clutch the book I’d recommended to him, "The Love We Keep," and shuffle toward the front counter.
As I walk, I steal glances back at the romance section where he’s still standing.
He’s looking at the books I’d picked out for him, a thoughtful expression on his face.
I smile to myself, remembering how he’d looked at me when I was talking about the books.
It was like he was seeing me for the first time.
When I reach the front counter, Mrs. Chen greets me with a smile.
"Hello, dear. How are you today?"
"I’m good, thanks," I say, placing the book on the counter in front of her.
She scans it and then wraps it carefully in brown paper.
As she works, she tells me about her own love story, which started in this very bookstore forty years ago.

I nod politely and listen intently as she talks about how she met her husband among these shelves. "We were both reaching for the same book," she says, her eyes twinkling with nostalgia.
"And we’ve been together ever since."
"That’s so sweet," I say, smiling at her.
She hands me the wrapped book and my receipt.
"Thank you," I say, tucking them into my messenger bag.
